Dash light has come on saying problem with handbrake and my garage man has said it is the handbrake module. Phoned Toyota and was quoted 1500. Tried breakers and they said common problem and be very hard to get one.

Anyone any advice, suggestions any help would be grateful. Thanks.

Thanks colm. For the brother in law I'm enquiring. What's your opinion on this kind showed would you know and if this is a common complaint with the avensis. Thanks

It def is a common complaint. I wouldn’t be spending €1500 on one for an 09, on the other hand the one for €500 might break next week.

Thanks, I will pass on the good news. Thanks again colm

Recheck the rear brakes, the code will read a faulty actuator problem even if it's a sized calliper pin.

Happened mine recently, handbrake not fully released cooked the pads discs and calipers on my 09, let it off rather than fix as it was second time it happened, pity as it was a fantastic car in every other way

    Two here on ebay.
    €713
    €829
    both plus delivery

Probably also a saving to be made by sourcing in NI.

Be careful to be 100% sure it's the right part for your car before ordering.
Important to consult with the mechanic who is doing the job.

Thanks. As I said its the brother in laws car and I think he's waiting for mechanic to check brakes and especially the calipers before he makes a purchase. He was chatting to a good few other owners who said alot of the time it can be a totally different issue throwing up the Actuator fault.

Apart from the light on has he noticed anything else wrong?

Don't think so. He said the handbrake was working as normal. I will be speaking to him tomorrow so I will find out how he got on. Post how he got on tomorrow.

Has he had the rear pads changed recently? Clearing the code sometimes helps and it might not return.

Handbrake fault light can come up for a number of unrelated reasons. My bet would be injectors in trouble. Common enough for it to happen these

You just reminded me of something.

I was in a garage a couple of years ago and a guy with an Avensis was telling the mechanic his tale of woe.
Car stopped in a cloud of smoke. It turned out an injector failed and ended up with a holed piston. Major expense.
The mechanic asked if there was any warning light. The owner said no only the handbrake warning light came on.

So to OP, definitely follow up on the injectors.

Jesus that's a strange one. Anyhow mechanic checked calipers and seems to be ok,handbrake working fine. Changed oil and filters and light has gone off. Going on a week now. Head frying stuff.

And if it's showing only one faulty you're better off replacing the 4. The others WILL give up before long if you just do one

Just be careful you don't lose power under acceleration OP

I’ve just had one replaced in a 14 avensis. Engine was running horribly and shuddering badly under any load. Didn’t show any fault originally, but then as you said, the check handbrake warning came up eventually. Why do you say all 4 should be replaced out of interest?

Not to be a prophet of doom or anything but you might get away with the other 3 for 6 months or it could be a week or two. Normally they don't last too long unfortunately.

Is this the 2.0 litre engine or the 2.2. That the injectors are going on.
I was told the 2.2 D4D engine is very troublesome.

    Mine is the 2.0 d4d.

That's worse. Alot of people recon the DVD engine is almost indestructible. I had an 08 1.4 one myself and it was one of the best engines I ever had .perhaps they deteriorated after a certain year.

Funny enough, I looked for the d4d 2.0 at the time rather than the engines supplied by bmw in the newer toyotas as I thought they were particularly reliable. This was after having an insignia die on me. Any engine can give trouble I suppose. Fixable tho, unlike the Opel.

It's a nightmare at the moment when looking for a good reliable motor. You could talk to as many people as you like and all would have different opinions. Alot of different makes now have same engine like my 1.6 Peugeot partner same engine as my cousins focus. I think myself it's just down to luck instead of make anymore.

    2.0 mostly

    2.0 mostly

That's strange, I would say 80% of people I was chatting to about the avensis told me to stay away from the 2.2.
Also not as good after 16 as changed to the BMW engines.
As I say it's a total Head fry as everyone has different opinions.
