"Ireland’s first commercial DAB+ multiplex will broadcast ten new radio stations to Ireland’s main cities; Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford. The initial service area covers 1.8m people, expanding quickly to each cities commuter belt adding a further 1.2m, then rolling out nationally."

"To be part of Ireland’s first commercial DAB+ multiplex simply
express an interest before Friday 14th February 2020."

No mention of a trial either, does this mean that licencing has finally been sorted by them for a national DAB multiplex?

In light of RTE's plan to dump DAB, I wonder did 2rn come knocking on DBDB's door, or was it the other way round?

Absolutely nothing to do with 2rn, Dusty is going to be using other equipment.

Sorry, my bad. I meant to allude towards the licencing aspect.

Branigan is going to look a right Tit unless he signs up his 3 stations, after him claiming to be interested in going on DAB in the papers the day RTE announced they were abandoning it.

This looks like a BTS initiative. I presume it's not another trial.

Wonder will this impact on Freedab ,RTE Dab is closing on Easter Monday April 13th apparently.

Content of the service will be important alas BAI content provider restrictions will limit potential for any alternative service beyond 8Radio

This platform would really suit the spin off stations like Q102 80s.

It would suit most city stations with no national coverage and the fees seems good value

Same old same old then - there is an app if you want to listen to any Irish station.

The Dab+ trial needs to bring something new to the party, otherwise it is a waste of time.

The site refers to the need for a section 71 licence - but then says these can be processed quickly and implies that they are easy to get.

This seems to fly in the face of the experience of applicants for section 71 licenses with Freedab citing their difficulties as the reason for starting Freedab.

Ironically db cite the pirate station service as an example of why Dab carriage is a good idea !

Unless he’s really changed his mind,my understanding is that he has zero interest in DAB

which is not scalable and costs more the more listeners they get.

Worth reading the EU examples they have on there site. People prefer Dab when it's available with good coverage instead on online.
Some very good research from other countries.
Unfortunately Ireland hasn't had the chance with the current rté monopoly managing it.
All new cars fitted with DAB is also a huge change, as when launched first most cars didn't have and it cost to have in there cars

The research provided gives a very positive outlook on the future of DAB and the EU experience,

    However :
DB are selling a product so it will all be positive spin.
DB quote 20% ownership of DAB radios / 344,000 Dab sets in Ireland - that seems paticularly high and high street retailers experience would not tally with this %
DB state that there is high awareness of DAB......

The graphs that are shown are meaningless without context eg DAB has been a success in the UK due to the large number of extra services,in Norway the national FM services where closed and moved to DAB only.

Content will be king for DAB to have any success in Ireland, for the moment it's wait and see.

RTE doesn't have a monopoly on managing DAB .

The commercial sector is under the control of the BAI
