    Hi Laois peeps. I've just been reading about Oliver J Flanagan and his son, Charlie Flanagan. The whole Jew-bashing thing was mad and Charlie.. well you can see the news.

    I'm just curious, how were they so successful there ? Is there low voter turnout there or something?v or maybe they were effective at getting government investment?

    Hope thís Q doesn't bother anyone by the way. I'm from Gaillimh and we have Noel Grealish trying to convince us that a handful of refugees are our most pressing issue to date 🀢🀮

    Charlie got elected because he was his father's son. Irish politics is wall to wall with similar situations, Brian Cowen succeeded his father, Olwyn Enright succeeded her father. This is just in Laois/Offaly but you don't have to look too hard to find other political dynasties who operate the same way.

    This is the way Irish communities vote, it's clannish and mostly based on personal interactions rather than a proven track record of delivering public service for the country.

    I'm at a complete loss for how he continually gets elected because there is very little in Mountmellick (where he is from). John Moloney afaik is from Mountmellick and made little difference there too (aside from providing the local community pub/undertakers services).

    I can't remember where I saw the statistics but I think Laois has had some of the lowest IDA investment in the country historically. This is despite being in at the middle of the country, close to rail links, close to motorways. So Flanagan can't really say (or any of them tbh) that they brought investment into the county.
