Offered Job but it's subject to a 5 year record check

Basically on my CV it stated that I worked for 9 months longer than I actually did on one particular job. I did it to fill in for a time that I got fired from two jobs over the course of 9 months.

And as well as details of what I've been doing from companies and colleges, this they have also asked for 3 referees. And one of the referees worked in the company that I lied about. It seems my choices are to either tell the truth and hope that they don't compare my CV to the form I fill out (and say it's a typo if they do), or to hope that they won't contact that particular referee, or if that referee even knows when I actually finished at that company.

Bear in mind that at this stage I've already been offered the job and I've had two trial days and I have gotten good feedback. So I don't think a period of unemployment would come against. The only thing that could look bad about it, would be that I lied on my CV.

I which I knew know what the odds are of this company actually contacting such references!

This thread is going to go real well!

To answer your question, if the referee is from a job that's 2+ years ago there's not a hope they're going to remember your exact start/finish dates. In all likelihood they'll give the usual platitudes "good guy, works hard etc" and tick the box next to length of employment, you won't be caught out.

Anyways, I hear some high horses on the way. Good luck.

Just hope for the best. My job contacted my previous referees but then again I didn’t put down anyone I knew who would spill beans

Don't waste your time on this one.

So today was my induction day for a convenience store job. I was told to bring along just my bank details and PPS number. When the manager was entering my details on the PC, I gave him a year that made me one year younger than I am. A few seconds after he entered that in he said "oh yeah and I'll need to get a photocopy of a passport of driver's license. And by making myself a year younger it meant that I changed the year to the first year of a new decade. Oh darn! In the last two jobs I had they never sought for this so I though it'd be grand.

I'll be okay, right. There just might be an awkward moment.

Usually they contract out the record check to Experian or someone like that, they as long as the dates you give them match up with what the referees say you'll be fine, forget about the CV that got you the job.

I have my doubts that this is even a serious post....

You have demonstrated yourself to be a blatant lier and a poor one at that! As an employer, it is bad enough to discover that an employee is untrustworthy, never mind starting out by employing one.... honestly this must be a trolling exercise...

In the unlikely event that it actually is true:

    - Next time around keep the lie vague so it can't be checked, something like independent travel, online education courses, caring for a sick relative etc...

    - Since you you don't tell us the employment area, it is hard to say how detailed the check will be, if it is something like a bank or other financial institution then expect the process will be outsourced and with be done by professionals who will go deep. Otherwise who knows.
