How Important is a VPN when Traveling and Using WiFi?

When one is relying on wifi networks abroad exclusively, I am certain there are security concerns (logging into email, banking, bookings). Is a VPN the way to be safe?

Could somebody give practical advice? Maybe ELI5 as I don't even know how to get one (never used in my life). Are they available for iPhones to use when connecting with apps too? Or just for laptops?

The main concern when using public Wifi is that unencrypted data can be sniffed .... so yes using a VPN will encrypt all your data so it does solve that problem. However all email, banking sites etc are already encrypted these days ( look for the padlock icon ) so I dont really see what extra VPN gives you.

Other reasons to use VPNs would be to access sites that may be geo blocked.... for instance if you want to watch the RTE Player in the US and it blocks your phone - You can set the VPN to make it appear you are logging in from Ireland and continue to watch that content.
