Hi. I bought a 254xp off ebay and I cant manage to get it started. The tank was drained to be posted so I filled it and gave it a few pulled and I noticed I wasnt getting the correct sound as to say it was trying to start. I went from there to changing the spark plug and while I taking the lead off the spark plug it snapped so i put a new ignition coil and lead on it aswell. I have spark in the spark plug so I'd imagine it's something to do with the fuel supply? Would the fuel lines be air locked or do I need to prime the carburetor? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could try this, it worked for mine anyway.

First thing is to check Compression hold the starter handle and see how fast the saw drops under its own weight, it should be very slow if the compression is good.
If not then you may need to fit a new piston and rings if you are lucky, if not then its a cylinder/piston/rings

I doubt the fuel lines are airlocked, they could be perished and drawing air though and may need replacement.

The fuel is pumped with a small vacuum diaphragm pump in the carb, if that diaphragm dries out then it can stop working and no fuel gets through.

You can buy rebuild kits for the carb or probably better yet a new carb isn't much more and can be a better choice than trying to get an old carb working.
Bear in mind that these saws are pretty old now, and a lot of the components can be worn and perished so you may need to do a fair bit of work to get it working correctly.

They are good saws though when working right.

Thanks il try the new carb if the compression is ok. Yea I knew that these saws are old but I heard there easy to work on and a very good saw when going right. I had bought with the intention of doing it up if needed. The ad on ebay stated that it was running fine so I hope it might be a quick fix like the carb or that.

All the XP series were great saws, the 242, 254 and 262 had good power for their weight.
They aren't hard to work on either.
See how you get on and come back if you have any more Q's

afraid all my saws are stihl (although did have problems with a husky hedge trimmer which ended up need new fuel lines as the old ones disintigrated)

Ethanol kills fuel lines, I find the yellow Tygon stuff to be the best of a bad lot.
