Getting Sky Q installed tomorrow and from what I’m hearing there’s no way of putting in the relevant frequency and other settings to get UTV?

Can anyone confirm this is correct please?

We have UTV tuned in on sky q. I don't remember the frequency but a quick search and we found it. You just can't record on any channel manually tuned in.

You will need to manually tune it in. It will show up under other channels. A quick Google search will get you the correct frequency.

As far as Sky are concerned, anything you tune in on Other Channels (or Manual Tuning as it’s called on Sky Q) is your own private business, they are not responsible for providing it to you.

They have to take that attitude of course, because some of the channels that can be tuned in don’t have ROI rights and are claiming to their own content suppliers that they can’t be received here except for overspill.

Had Sky Q for the year. It came cheap as part of broadband and TV package for 50 euro a month for a year. After year was up, didn't renew and went back to my FTA box where I can order the channels the way I want and record what I want.

The other channels on Sky Q is a pain in the arse! You need to use it for lots of channels that are free to air but not on the Sky EPG.

I also fell for that deal and put away the Sky Q box after 2 weeks because it was so crap. No direct access to a favourites list (now fixed Im told), crazy channel numbering, constant nag screens each time you accessed the menu " you might like this..." which of course wasn't available to you unless you upgraded. No HD ITV etc. Constant monitoring of what and when you watched. No network access or streaming. I could go on. Basically everything I am so used to doing for free (and totally legally***) on my enigma box is an extra on Sky Q.

You forgot to mention pay extra for "multi-room" :D

I wonder if they will add another extra to watch on PCs or tablets from the Satellite?

(I had not realised/remembered they prevented recording of added channels)

    I am not surprised I guess :)

I thought sky go was received over internet, not satellite .... I was mistaken?

    Do they charge per device?

It's done online. The charge covers up to 4 devices.

and the box freaks out if you disconnect from web to stop them spying on you. constant nag screens

    I don't think they're spying on you :P

they monitor what you are watching and when.

Not exactly spying. You are aware of this when signing up to the service.

It is over internet but you need a multi screen sub to use.. it's up to x device's..

But the only choice is that or refuse the service. I value my privacy.

It’s a bit different with Sky Q - the app operates in basically three modes. When connected to your LAN, it connects to your Sky Q box and the channels stream from that box. You have access to all the channels you would on your Sky multiscreen subscription (eir Sport only if you have that entitlement with your eir Sport sub). Out of home it acts like the normal Sky Go (ie streams over the internet) and you only have access to Sky Go channels though you can remote record. There is a third mode which is “offline” - if you’re on a plane or otherwise out of network coverage - you can only watch previously downloaded content.

They have to take that attitude of course, because some of the channels that can be tuned in don’t have ROI rights and are claiming to their own content suppliers that they can’t be received here except for overspill.

They do not have to exclude added channels from PVR or EPG lookup, they choose to do so because access to the EPG and Sky+/Q is a commercial product in itself.

Really the Sky monopoly on direct-to-home pay tv is the fault of the UK regulators who put no consumer protection in place to prevent the obviously anti-competitive combination of a dominant provider also controlling the access hardware/software.

The rights contracts between broadcasters and content owners has nothing to do with it, there is no law requiring Sky or any other hardware supplier forcing them to restrict customers from using their products to access or record FTA channels.

Both the broadcasters and their content suppliers are fully aware where and how their channels can be viewed and their terms will be written on that basis. The ONLY people who have a requirement to restrict access to content are the broadcasters themselves, It is up to them to take any steps deemed necessary to restrict reception in areas the rights holders disallow, the blackouts on certain programmes from Irish channels on Saorsat or NI targeted services but not NI overspill of ROI terrestrial transmissions.

    Thanks.

When streaming from that box it is taking the data from the satellite and not over the internet?
I had the impression the app always took the data from the internet and being in touch with the main Sky Q box or not determined the channels available.

Its all a bit convoluted for something that could be very simple :)

No, it’s not part of a sky package . It happens to be available on their receiver as are all or most ITV channels

It is from the box alright - the delay is much shorter (seconds, not up to two minutes), you have access to all your recordings, channels that should be HD are HD, all your satellite channels (inc BBC) are available. There are only two disparities. The first relates to subscription channels that are not part of a Sky package and you need to have a Multiscreen entitlement on those subs to view on Sky Go. (This won’t affect most people and 99% of those who it does affect will be eir Sport satellite only subscribers). The second difference is that there is no manual tuning.

The Sky Q mini box works the same way - streamed from the main box. Oddly the mini box has no problem with manual tuning. Maybe they think it’s too complex to implement via the app.
