Do dealers contact customers for recalls?

If a recall notice was issued and a customer wasn't aware, which then caused a bigger problem, is the dealer/maker liable?

Specifically I suppose customers of main dealers. Not those obviously who buy elsewhere.

You usually get a letter out from the manufacturer.

The manufacturer or distributor should contact the customer.

The dealer would only inform the customer if it was in for other work generally.

I bought a 1 year old car from a main dealer which has since had 2 recalls apparently and I've not been contacted, even though they have my info. Normal or not?

Manufacturer applies to Shannon for a list of registered owners and their addresses who are affected by the recall and then write to them asking to make an appointment with their local dealer to have the recall work done. Before anyone starts quoting GDPR, there are provisions in the GDPR laws when it comes to recalls concerning safety.

I've been contacted twice by Nissan Ireland, by letter, in relation to software updates for my Qashqai

This would be normal, if a garage/dealer closed etc who would have details for future recalls etc? That why manufacturers make contact

Yet again then, Subaru Ireland have dropped the ball.

Generally the manufacturer or distributor will contact you for a recall. There are situations where a dealer will contact you but they're usually exceptional, generally if you've been in their workshop and they've forgotten to carry out a recall or the manufacturer is extra keen to get one done so they give dealers the details of local owners.

Damage consequential to a recall should be covered, generally speaking.

Depending on your situation here, it'd be important to acknowledge the difference between a recall and a campaign. Recalls are generally safety related and the manufacturer contacts you, a campaign is a known fault that gets rectified if your car is in a dealers workshop but isn't necessarily safety related. Consequential damage relating to a campaign may not be covered if you are a long time out of the dealer network.

How did you hear about the recalls......

They are normally done based on the VIN number.

Ring any Subaru dealer with your reg and they can check exactly what recalls apply with your car (dealer can find the VIN based on your reg).

Should then be a case of booking it in for the work at a suitable.

Thing to note with Subaru as well is that selling a variety of different variants in markets around the world.

A recall on a US spec 2012 Legacy may not actually apply to an Irish spec 2012 Legacy.

Edit - I see Toyotafanboi made the point about campaigns/technical bulletins already.
