2011 F10 BMW 520 - noise at start up

Just this past few mornings noticed a rattle sound for approx 2 or 3 secs when I start the car in the morning, thereafter settles down to normal engine sound. During this time there is an increase in the revs.
Doesn't seem to happen if I start the car throughout the day.
Any ideas? Should I be worried.
Approx 140k kms on the engine. Otherwise car hasn't missed a beat.
    Thanks

Top timing chain. Can be replaced in situ.

No idea to be honest. Never did one but was told by a BMW master mechanic about it.

When the chain starts to stretch it'll rattle just after changing oil and filter or first thing in the morning.

Best bet is to find a BMW specialist nearby and talk to them

    Incorrect info.

Only the top chain can be replaced in situ.what about the other 2 chains and guides and rails etc.

If you dont know dont pretend you do.its engine out job and very common we do them all the time.

Yours could of being done under recall.but what mileage is on it if it's around or over 100 and you know it wasnt being done under recall I'd be getting it done soon and knowing where u stood with it.its a simple job for anyone that's done them

At that mileage with no record of it being done I'd be getting it changed.just so you know its engine out job.and who ever does the job make sure they use the genuine bmw parts.not these lads offering to fo it for x amount of money and the timing chain kit costing them 150 quid stay away from them.
And trust me do get it done because if it snaps and it will snap if left go u will be in for a big big bill.
Only finished one there that I'd to put a full set of valves into a new con rod and a full set of rockers.

Anyways if ya have any other questions fire ahead

What year did the engine change from N47 for the 520?

And when did they finish up using it in the 520?

Cars built after about September 2014 will use the more reliable B47 engine. All pre-facelift cars and the earliest facelifted cars use the N47N engine (the one with the timing chain problem).

If you're not sure which engine the car has got, the models with the N47N engine have a type code of 5C32, whereas the type code is 5E52 for the models with the B47 engine.

The 'type code' is characters 4 to 7 on the VIN number, which you can see on the windscreen on the passenger's side (near the wiper blades). These are the four characters immediately after 'WBA' on the VIN number. There's also a different engine cover (google is your friend) for the cars with the newer engine, too.

They aren’t covering the 520d under recall so hardly offering it for the 3 series!?

If it's rattling it needs to be done ASAP. I personally wouldn't drive the car until it's been checked out and given the all clear, there is the risk the entire chain could give up the ghost and write off the engine.

Not urgent, but once it snaps it really is game over for the car.

It is expensive... Might be three digit figure if you're lucky, probably four thought all in.

So priced a few guys, genuine only and there was a guy near my parents place who did the replacement of the timing belt, replaced the turbo, set of brake pads front and back and full service incl filters.. Total 1365....think I did reasonably well out of it... Car feels great to drive now.
