The singer Camilla Cabello apologised for racist comments she posted on the Tumblr platform in 2012 and 2013 about black, Asian and Mexican people.

She was born in Cuba and brought up in the US. Cubans and Mexicans are Hispanic people and so they are ethnically similiar and Hispanics, like black and Asian people, have suffered racial discrimination in America.

So why would a Cuban-American girl make racist comments about people of other ethnic minorities in America?

Ethnically, many Cuban-Americans are white - they are closer to being Spanish than native American.

She apologized over a fortnight ago. What's the point of bringing it up here, in After Hours, in Ireland, and now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

I would never use thems words but can see with all the influence and people using these words where someone young could just say them as heard so many times etc.

No excuse we need to respect each other.

Young and stupid does come to mind and it's amazing how ones brain adapts and basically grows up usually.

Just because she speaks Spanish and is from Cuba doesnt mean shes not white. She very clearly is white, with obvious southern european heritage rather than native american/black/asian or any other non white ethnicity. And she would make those comments well because she is an individual and a person's race will not govern whether they will engage in racist behaviour or not. Many east asian and indian communities are remarkably racist towards black and dark skinned people, for example. Also while Hispanics may experience racism in the US, I'm sure white hispanics would experience less than hispanics of native heritage.

Well according to who is she not white then?
Generally 'white' is considered to be of european descent. And shes clearly of largely a european background.
Hispanic is not a race but rather a cultural term, because the US census distinguishes between 'white-hispanics' and non white-hispanics' this would indicate it is not it's own racial category like black or asian or white is

    Strange unnecessary snideness.

Anyway, she was 15/16 - ridiculous to be vilifying her now for stuff she said as a clueless kid. The same mob would be saying "Ah she was just a kid" to excuse her if it was some other situation where it suited them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,653 ✭✭✭✭Plumbthedepths

Thanks OP( NOT) since her heritage was called into question here,I googled some images. My illusions have been shattered after finding unphotoshopped beach images. Acres and acres of cellulite. Still a pretty face though.

I agree I'm sure everyone would have did and said things at 15 that they wouldnt want anyone to hear about. Though at the same time it does show a certain level of meanness that most kids probably wouldnt have ever engaged in no matter what age..I dont really care that she said it but if I knew her personally I'd probably see her in a bit of a different light

Yeah could be out of meanness - or stupidity, or both.

It's AH one needs to let oneself go every once in a while. Although I find photo shop an insidious invention compelling the easily lead to try and achieve the unachievable. Fraudulent tbh.

Don't you know you cannot be racist to Caucasian people.

there is no such generally-agreed definition of whiteness, certainly not to the extent where a poster on a message board gets to airily designate what race someone of latin american heritage can/should identify as. that's ridiculous, and to double down based on appearance or presumed historical heritage is really dodgy

snide? meh, it was imo a very shaky piece of ground from which to have a go at her from.

edit: to be fair to wakka it was a more considered post than just 'having a go'. but designating whiteness, in context, oof nope

I think the question should be, why are people digging through crap someone wrote and looking to sensationalise it in current context?

She was 14 years old and she wasn't making racist comments she was sharing racist memes (not that it's much better, but there is a difference).

How is stating her heritage having a go at her? Race is a social construct so of course there will never be a definitive means of assessing it. Generally how people look falls in line within a certain category of race. Would it be so ridiculous to say Idris Elba is clearly of African heritage or that Tilda Swinton is clearly of European heritage? Those statements wouldn't even be contested among most people despite the fact most would have no idea what their actual ethnicity was or how they identified. Cabello looks much more European than she does native american, asian, black or mixed race, so hardly the most unsubstantiated assumption

Social construct? So skin colour or facial attributes are just to be ignored?

But this should be a tool used in the likes of school to show no matter what you do or write and put on the net it will come back and get you....

My sons are 28 and 20 I have been telling them since they became aware of and users of social media that their actions are not 'footprints on a beach' but rather 'rather footprints in concrete' there for evermore.

Saw them too, she has a pretty face and a great voice but below the waist not so great but it's no harm to let other women know she is human and has her faults. As I said to another poster I think photo shop is insidious.

Cuba has a lot of different ethnicities. Afro Cuban Arará....lucumi..Hispanic etc. And there is racism there.

Traditionally hispanic cubans have looked down on everyone else.
