Occassional Parking on Grass.

Have a house with a small garden with rear access via a laneway. Currently the rear parking gate is fixed shut and the garden is grass overgrown with weeds.

My plan is to replace the gate to allow access for occasional parking. Only in situations when a visitor is staying or there's no on-street spaces. So it'd be maybe once or twice a month.

When used, the parking space would take up the majority of the garden and I'd really much prefer grass to gravel or paving.

I know there are hexagonal mesh-type products on the market for reinforcing grass for parking, but I've always found them very unpleasant to walk on let alone sit on or for kids to play on. And they tend to make the grass look very patchy.

I was wondering if anyone's had any experiences with using grass for occasional parking? Is there any method of having well draining soil and tough grass that would allow for its to be occasionally parked on?

In my totally non-expert opinion I would say the grass will be fine being parked on that little.

Of course, if the ground is saturated driving a car over it will do a bit of damage, but I don't think there's much you can do about that. Maybe some old timber could be used as something to sit between the car and the grass, though not sure if this would be better or worse.
