C220 service D15

I'm looking to get my 08 C220 CDI serviced. Just got a price of €449 for a full service. I expected it to be more expensive than my last car but that seems nuts.

Any suggestions for a service around D15, D11, etc?

Got another quote of about €280-360 and was told it'd depend on the type of air filter needed and he wouldn't know until he looked at the old one. If that's the price then that's the price, I just don't want to get robbed :)

    Thanks!

"Full" service is arbitrary really. What was included for that price?

I paid €179 recently for an A1 (basic) service on a car with the same engine as your C220 at a main dealer, which I thought was OK value considering it gets a full check which takes time. Beware of someone who doesn't know what type of air filter is in your car, and don't be surprised in the least when they just happen to find other things along the way that jack up the price too.

No need to go to a main dealer for a 12yo car of course, except if it's something very specialist, but in my experience you're more likely to pay the quoted price or get an approval phonecall before additional work is carried out.

    Thanks,

    Included was:

    B-Service: From € 449

    • Oil & Filter Change

    • Software Upgrades / Product Enhancements (if any)

    • Vehicle Health Check (Tyres, Brakes & Suspension Checked)

    • FREE Wash and Vacuum

    • Pollen Filters Replaced

    • Air Filters Replaced

Could you fire on a link/number for where you got yours done. That's seems very reasonable!

Sounds normal pricing for a main dealer. Makes no sense bringing a 12 year old car to a main dealer for servicing though as they will charge you the same for servicing and labour as if it were a new car.

Thanks. The €280-360 was an independent garage. I thought €360 was high but maybe it's ok for a full service. As I said, if that's the price then I'll pay it, just trying to not get ripped off

Remember main dealers will nearly always be more expensive as they have higher operating costs. Full service is also a relative term in that it means different things to different garages rather than being equal across the board.

The independent garage was oil and filter, air and pollen filter and put up on the ramp to have it checked over, tyres etc.

Thought it was strange that the air filter would vary from around €20-80 (according to the mechanic himself) and he wouldn't know until the old one came out.

Try Coolmine Motors - always found them excellent & reasonably priced.

Cheers. Got a price of €230 for a full service in Discount Tyres Blanch. Hopefully it's not a case of too good to be true...

Are they still 160 for the standard service?

Not sure, haven’t been due a service recently. Give them a call & I’m sure they will confirm price

To me that's mad expenditure for a 08 car on nothing more than a basic service.
    Couldn't you do it yourself?

    Oil - ~€60
    Oil Filter ~€20
    Pollen Filter ~€20
Air Filter ~€20 (unless there's something special about it)

    = ~€120

(Tyres, Brakes & Suspension Checked) - that will be checked at your next NCT
Software Upgrades / Product Enhancements - should be nothing at this stage

You can make the oil change easier the next time by fitting a quick oil drain valve this time around from these guys (https://www.adverts.ie/engine-parts/engine-oil-drain-valve/21573729). Any subsequent oil changes will then take no time at all.

It is mad expenditure, that's why I didn't go there. Got a full service for €230 which was grand.

I wouldn't have a clue where to even start with doing it myself, and I don't have the time either to be honest.

The Mercedes "B Service" for that price includes a brake fluid change, that's why the price is so different.

I know they do it using a pump which is far less labour intensive and probably takes 30mins, but it's extremely difficult to do at home.

Different mercedes dealers different prices. Dublin dealer quoted me for B service 550,done it in kildare in mercedes dealership for 379

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,127 ✭✭✭kirving

Nevertheless, a Mercedes B service which was quoted, includes a brake fluid change. I very much don't that the €230 service included that.

Good point. How much would one expect to pay at an indy for a brake fluid change?

Seriously? That’s what’s wrong with this country. Can we not take responsibility for the roadworthiness of our own cars and not depend on an annual or semi-annual test. I’ve seen the state of tyres coming off two year old cars only brought in because they’ve worn down to the canvas.

The OP seems to be a diligent owner in terms of servicing and i'm assuming he has had it serviced and checked in the past year.

For the main dealer to justify a massive increase for something that other garages will do for a small fee isn't justified.

If you are taking your car in for a service, most indy's will do the service and have a quick inspection to advise you of what else needs to be done. It's in their best interest as well in order to increase revenue.

Hundreds of garages will do an inspection check for €35.

The NCT inspection backs that up by an independent third party evaluation.

Not €200 or so that Merc charge anyway, but not far off. I have the tools to do it myself, but no garage, so when it comes down to adding another €200 to get it all done together in a single day, vs having to go elsewhere, I thought it was worth it.

I think the email was incorrect to be honest. The B Service is supposed to include a brake fluid change, that (and the cabin air filter) is the key difference between the A and B services.

Sorry, I realise too that I didn't respond to your first question. I've gone to Western Motors, and Connolly's in Galway. Expensive labour wise, as all main dealers are, but couldn't be more up front with their fixed pricing, and didn't look for spurious things.

Yeah, most likely. Thanks for that

My point, and you seem to agree with me, is that we shouldn't depend on the NCT to catch failures or potential failures. The OP does appear to share that view.
I have three cars to NCT every year and very rarely do I even get an advisory on 18, 17 and 12 year old cars because I keep on top of maintenance independent of any NCT concerns.

Literally put mine through the NCT last week, failed on driver side light focus. Got it sorted today, retest next weekend

Agreed. NCT is just a 3rd party evaluation and corroboration.

Cars of that age will be going in annually for a check.

In between, servicing and inspection should be done.
