Hi, can anyone recommend a good place to purchase a home alarm or someone to install one? One that can be monitored by yourself as we dont want monthly fees

I'd recommend getting a survey & quote from a few licenced installers.
You can check the register of licenced installers here

I've been having a look at Home alarms too and doing some research.
Honestly, I think the home alarm industry, as it stands will be obsolete in a few years time.

The main function of the alarm being a. the deterrent b. notification

Smart home montioring kits are available from different brands (such as Nest) - from window contacts, to sensors, to infrared cameras & video cameras, and alarms of course. They can deter and notify.

This has really taken off in the US and is making inroads in the UK and continental Europe.

Basically, with the wireless technology available, it is easily possible to set up the alarm yourself (with a pair of hands and a smart phone). Notifications can be sent to your phone (and other selected users) & with smart-home cameras you can see (or be sent) a live feed of whats happening, allowing you to disable the alarm, , contact the Gards etc. Most smart home kits operate over the existing internet connection in your house. GSM backups (over cellelar networks) will become an option in the future with smart home alarm kits.

The cost of alarm installation, regular maintenance fee, and costly contractual-subscriptions (up to £400 a year) will be a thing of the past.

There is a good thread on the IoT forum about this here. The thread gets particularly interesting from page 5 on where one of the contributors purchases a smart wireless alarm online and self installs. It is a very impressive system at a very good price point with some very interesting features.

    See review here.
