A root system from trees or even larger shrubs too close to your driveway are liable to lift or damage your tarmac. One or two feature trees or larger shrubs a bit further in would soften the look of the place and maybe some smaller shrubs on the driveway boundary. Personally I quite like lavender as you get a fantastic smell as well as looking lovely but it likes quite dry soil and sunlight. It really comes down to your preferred aesthetic, what the soil is like and whether you're looking for something very low maintenance or fancy a bit of gardening. You see low box hedges used quite a bit but they wouldn't be my choice.

About four or five trees either side of the drive way could look nice. We used about 10 metres between each tree and planted lime trees(tilia cordata). I was also considering whitebeam as an option but the lime trees look good now. I planted some crocuses around the trees in the grass which add some nice spring colour before the grass needs to be cut.

Agreed, I've also seen fastigiate hornbeam used like this which look super.

A low growing box hedge could work. Easy to keep neat with a trim every so often.
