Find another purpose for your life. Make new friends fill your days with more positive activities so there’s not a huge hole left

Find the cause of the drinking.... Usually some form of depression, or wanting to block stuff out. Treat that whether it's counselling or admitting mistakes or whatever.

Drinking to excess is usually a symptom of a much bigger issue.

There are a few centers like Talbot Grove in Castleisland and Buree in Limerick, I'm sure there are a few up the country as well.

There was a recent AMA from someone who has been through rehab, might be a good place to start, hearing how someone else battled it:

Good luck. I hope you can get the help you are seeking.

Quitting alcohol is the first step. Allows you to sober up but nature abhors a vacuum so you will very likely crave something to replace what alcohol gave you physically and mentally.

Some people just swap it for another addiction. As somebody said, once you have sobered you prob need help to change whatever it is that draws you to addictions. Sex, tv, video games, medication, food, excercise, work can be among many different addictions.

You can also learn a lot in support groups, not least learning how to listen. No doubt somebody has had very similar experiences or thoughts that have maybe haunted you. A problem shared is a problem halved they say, it’s very true. People fortunate enough to not suffer addictions can be very ignorant and mean about it so it’s good to be around people who are all trying to help each other.

Many people are too embarrassed to ask for help, it's why we hear of so many suicides especially amongst young men. Taught to keep feelings to ourselves men tend to close up and hide their issues.

If you really need help then seek help, going alone is usually a short road to failure and deeper repercussions, getting help and support is the long road to successfully managing your issues.

Though some people hate their approach,
Alcoholics Anonymous works and has meetings all around the country. And is a lot cheaper than professional counselling.
