FG can’t let Ross get all the credit if the FAI is restructured so they’re just making sure to get their face in the paper.

The government were always going to bail the FAI out, the only question is how much reform is implemented first.

Where does it say they're giving them any money?
Since when is it on the shoulders of the government to bail them out? Let them drown - football is not that big here that it must be saved at all costs. They've squandered money for years - stinks of the bank bailout
If necessary let them go to liquidation and set up a state body to administer it from scratch

Football here is far too big to let it go the wall. Especially the Irish national team. They just need to figure out a way to save the Irish team, underage/amateur football and then let the rest go under and they would be fine from a vote point of view.

If they could save the LOI they it would be a bonus but that isn't necessary. The difficult part is thst if they give the FAI a bailout without getting significant reform then it will probably be a worse decision than letting it go completely vote wise. Generally in situations like this the government always end up backing down so will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Yeah, no surprise at all, at least on the salaries and other basic commitments. They could always take their stake in the Aviva as they did with banks.

There’d no national team without the LOI, it’s a requirement to pay in UEFA/FIFA international tournaments.

The fai failing isn’t football going to the wall. Just the administration the game would go on, there might be a few years of hardship at the top but I think ultimately it would come back better. Lower levels needn’t go anywhere in the short term just because the administration is gone as it’s already run by its own administrations. Personally I feel letting it go completely and supporting a new entity would be a far better use of money with sponsors much more likely to get on board. The current setup will never shake this image now no matter what they do.

IIRC the big caveat on any government bailout (even though there's no sign this is happening), this could be construed as government interference, which is against FIFA rules. So the FAI could be turfed out of competitions. Equally, allowing the org to collapse, with a new one taking its place, would also involve Ireland being removed from competitions as this new entity would have to apply for membership. At least this is my understanding.

My understanding is that UEFA don't allow governments to run or administer national associations.

I think your right on most of that, I would see being put out of competitions for a short while as a small price to pay for getting the house in order long term.

The FAI were always going to be bailed out. Anyone taken in by Ross’ tough talk didn’t understand the situation. Ultimately no bail out meant no international team, no international team was a vote loser to the government so a bail out was inevitable.
