I plan on buying a new used car in Jan Im just waiting on 2 cheques to clear, 1 lodged the first one today the other is due next Mon and I will lodge the second cheque then in order to buy the car.

Currently driving 04 almera grand little car, tax and nct just out so here is my predicament, Im going to tax it for 3 months could I claim back the tax on it when I change to new car. I doubt I will get anything for it probably just get it scrapped which is a pity as its running perfectly

If it was taxed up to the end of Dec, you’re ok before the end of Jan before you need to tax it again. If you’re getting a new car I wouldn’t bother taxing it. You won’t be able to claim it all back.

The minimum refund is 3 months and can only be done if you submit a cert of destruction. It's provided pro rata of 3 month increments, so 3, 6, 9.

Even if you tax it for 6, use it for 1 month, get it scrapped and look for a refund, I think you'd only be able to get, upto 3 months.

With the NCT out as well, your tax isn't the issue.
