A few years ago I came across this (an eco-friendly, fully customisable wooden laptop); however, when I went to enquire about it, I was told they only ever managed to make the prototype as they couldn't find anyone to carry out the actual production.

Is there anything similar on the market at the moment, does anyone know?

    Thanks.

    no there isn't afaik

if you want to be eco-friendly in terms of getting a laptop buy a quality and well/high-spec'd item that will last 6 / 8 years instead of a cheap one that will last 3/4 years (in terms of running well).

so you're talking about a budget of 1000/ 1200 or so

durable all-metal build, i5 cpu min, 16gb ram (or upgrade to that down the line).

    e.g. dell 7000 14 or dell xps 13.

The one I already have will also need a new keyboard, a new synaptic pointing device (or whatever the mouse thingy is called - I'm an expert, see?), new USB ports... I got it back in 2011, IIRC.

Making one out of wood and delaying the efficient process of making one out of existing production line materials would do more 'damage' to the environment. A little like scrapping a perfectly good car to purchase a €90k car that runs on nothing but harmless electricity.

I can't imagine your house burning down and having to be rebuilt would be much good for the environment either, fire of course being the whole reason why they stopped making appliances out of wood.

I am still using the laptop that I bought in 2012 (Lenovo E520).

I had never really been into fixing PCs or anything, but decided a couple of years ago that I would replace the HDD with an SSD instead of buying a new machine - runs way quicker now, I saved myself a grand or more, and far, far better for the environment than buying a brand new machine, with all of the resources & rare-earth minerals that that would entail.

As it happens, I also had to replace the keyboard - this was a really easy job, a fair bit easier than installing the SSD (which wasn't especially hard) - there are Youtube videos now explaining basically every little job on every single model, even relatively old ones like mine.

For the USB ports - is it just the case that you need extra USB ports? You can get a 4 USB port hub for a couple of euro on Amazon or Aliexpress, if so.

Like glass, electronics is sand with added magic.

But for electronics it's High Energy Magic. Intel will use four times as much power as Galway city in Leixlip

Very roughly plastic is made from twice it's weight in oil. So a litre of petrol should cover it. And most of the cost of fuel is excise and VAT.

    The wood is just greenwashing.

Well, the carbon footprint of a machined aluminum chassis is HUGE so maybe stick to polymers.
