Getting to Japan

I’m hoping to capitalize on experience of those who have been there recently maybe for Rugby World Cup. My question is about flight options. I can stand a flight for maybe 6-7 hours so I’m going to have to break the journey or get an injection! Any advice? (Not on the injection!)

If you could find your way to the L.A underground you will find a group of mercenaries.
Three of them have great experience of getting the other one on a plane even though he hates flying and "pities fools "
They should be able to sort you out.

Again? Really? You’re as bad as the repeats. Enjoy your cigar.

Try going via Helsinki with Finnair or through Dubai. Break up the journey with an overnight stopover?

I ma flying in May through Moscow with Aeroflot. 14hrs layover. Will get transit visa and check out Moscow.

I flew via Helsinki but the onward journey is 9.5 hours. Looked up Moscow to Tokyo flight times, but the news isn't any better there it seems.

Tried to do some research for you quickly there. The option that leaves you on the cusp with flight duration is Dublin -> Istanbul -> New Delhi -> Seoul -> Tokyo.

If at all possible reading that I'd go with the longer flight. Trailfinders may be able to help you with a route (maybe via the US).

    🤪

Helsinki will be your best option. Going via the gulf will create multiple 5-7 hour flights in succession which would likely be worse. Have you done many 9-10 hour flights overnight. They are generally easier to take as you have enough time to get some sleep.

Thanks for all sensible responses. It looks like two options: multiple stopovers and do it in stages enjoying the breaks or do the sleepover you suggest. Is business class necessary is the next question?

What is it about the longer flights you don't like?
    Being stuck in the seat?
The actual length of the flight?
Time flies in an almost proper bed in business.

Sense of confinement. Lack of movement. Tedium.

Its lot more tedious stopping in multiple airports, going through security multiple times, waiting around etc. etc.

I would suggest you may have to suck it up. Watch a few films, have a sleep.

I went to Japan for the world cup

    Dublin to Doha 6.5 hours

    Doha to Seoul 7.5 hours

    Seoul to Fukuoka 1 hour

you can get a ferry from Busan to Japan so that's also an option

I did business class last year to Haneda with British Airways. Worked out at €2k. I always wanted to fly business and felt the 12 hours justified the cost.

Will do the same for next year - still have the avios points which should knock a couple of quid off.

Is that from London? Only 2k? Possibilities there! It’s a sort of bucket list thing so I don’t mind splashing out.

Yeah - via Heathrow. I'm looking up flights in September at the moment as I want to see the sumo wrestling in Tokyo. Prices coming in at €8,700 for 4 with a further €375 off if I use avios points.

If you do go business class, give yourself the maximum amount of time between flights to enjoy the lounge in Heathrow.
