Vodafone SIRO connection-constant drops

I have my internet with Vodafone on their 1GB Siro FTTH network. However I keep encountering constant drops on my connection. For example they will happen near constantly for an hour or so twice or three times a day. I have the Vodafone supplied HG 659 router which I think is the problem. For example if on a video call the call will suddenly drop and we spend about 15 mins getting it back up or if in an online game the latency spikes to 200-300 and then drops completely with the windows connection icon going to a "no internet status".

I originally thought it might be the TP power line plugs that were causing it but family is noticing it on WiFi products as well.

I called them up and their tech support said that this was due to the router resetting and was necessary to maintain the health of the router. I'm just wondering if this is actually normal or a service issue?

There was another thread here with similar issues, though that seems focused on Ashbourne area, if you're in that area?

In the Bray area but it seems like that thread shows a lot of other people with the same problems. I wonder if its a Vodafone or Siro problem. If its Vodafone at least Sky is another provider and I can switch.
