    Can I suggest that when a thread is resigned due to it's length, that the new thread created is automatically followed by followers of the old thread?

    That would be one for the development team. However I suspect it may require a lot of effort to put in place. You can follow a thread without posting in it though and usually if a thread gets that big the new one will typically be on the front page of the relevant forum most of the time
