Dunnes €10 off voucher - VAT treatment

    Howdy,

Was doing a spot of shopping in Dunnes earlier today. Regularly use the €10 off voucher when you spend over €50 and for some reason today I got thinking about how it is treated from a VAT point of view. An average weekly shop will have a mixture of items at different rates (Bread 0%, Newspaper 9%, Firelighters 13.5%, Toilet Paper 23%). Your shopping bill comes to €70 including VAT at the different rates, they take €10 off for the voucher and you pay €60 to the cashier. At what VAT rate is the €10 off adjustment made? Is it pro rata on the goods that have being purchased? Is the adjustment all at 0%? There is no VAT split on the Dunnes receipt (unlike Tesco, Lidl and Aldi who all have a VAT split, I think!) so couldn't make it out from that. Anyone out there able to help my curious brain?

p.s. I'm aware that the majority of Dunnes customers will be private individuals who won't be reclaiming VAT but I'm curious to know how Dunnes account for the VAT on their Sales.

    Thanks in advance,
    Hcksaw.

I'd say it would have to be pro rata, seems the only fair method.
