Looking at changing the car early in the new year. A used car, decent boot, prefer petrol due to low milage, budget about 15,000. Will probably go to the UK. Wife drives it all week for short hops, I drive the weekend for kids matches. Do about 6000-8000 km a year.

    Looking at:

    Octavia 1.4 petrol
    Quashai
    Tucson

    Any thoughts on the above?

    Also any other recommendations?

    Thanks

For reliability and resale value, go with the Octavia the best of the three. Proven Volkswagen platform.

Any issue or things to be mindful of with that 1.4 engine?

    Anyone else offer any suggestions?

    Thanks

Can anyone else add anything to this?

    Thanks

Would you consider an outlander phev?
petrol electric hybrid, similar in size to the qashqai. With all the short hops, can get alot of nearly free driving.

Octavia is the one that stands out.

At only 8000km a year a 30 kWh leaf should do that just fine

Stick to the petrol for short hops (or EV)
There are enough horror stories and zero sympathy for those who try to run a diesel like that for cheap tax

Expensive tax, cheep tax is €120 a year.

Of those three the Octavia makes most sense. The only "advantage" the suv has is that you might like the extra height.

However that height brings the disadvantage of higher fuel consumption, slightly higher maintenance costs down the line and relatively small boot to the Octavia.

Something tells me the focus will be too sporty to be practically insurable by op. Would still recommend Octavia over the volvo and golf in terms of practical family use. Both are too restricted in boot space. The Octavia IMHO is class leading for practical motoring.

Terrible advice. The OP isn't doing near the mileage to run a diesel.

Yes I know, definitely will be a petrol.

    Thanks

If you have a driveway and the ability to install a home charge point a PHEV would be perfect as you could run all the time on battery and not use the petrol. Then if required use the petrol engine. Outlander is very popular and easy to pick up in UK so we went for that, GX4h model

We had a diesel but just not doing the long distance driving so swapped. Doing nearly 95% during the week on battery. I had it for 2 weeks doing kid drop offs etc and had it running for 100%. Done a long spin at weekend, 250km non stop so didn't top up battery. Got 7ltr/100km which was fairly impressive. I expected a lot worse.

They are decent spec, lots on the road and the PHEV element *should help resale in future

*I say should because no idea what way market shift will be over next few yearsb

Not sure how much room you may need but for comfort and enormous boot room you could also take a look at the Superb...come in 1.4 TSI petrol. A lot of spec on even standard models.
