Pop Rivets ....?

    Speak to Stigura. Please.

I went into town, today, hoping to corner Eustace and learn more about which rivets I might need. Then rely on them having just the thing in stock.

    Bloody shop was shut!

That's my latest / main project right out the window then. Might as well pick the brains of the Boards DIY Massive and grab them on line. I'll not be in town again for ages now.

So ..... Stigura has two bits of galvy strapping (What did someone call it, the other day? 'Joist Straps'? Something to do with roofs) I need to rivet them together, over a pretty thin bit of mesh.

Very light duty job. There's really gonna be no strains on any of the joins. It's a bird trap. Not a badger one.

Watched a ton of tubes. Now see I need a certain length of 'Hat'. Thickness isn't a massive deal. But, a tad longer than the standard ones I got with the gun would help.

Sadly, I don't (yet!) own one of those digital, calibrated caliper type things ~ note to self ..... ~ and my eyes don't do mm's.

My go too drill bit, for things like this, is 2.5mm. I also have a 4.5mm one. I say this simply because I've been drilling 2.5 holes like a man possessed. Before realising A/ The holes might not be big enough for the right rivets.

And, B/ No way on gods little green earth have I got any where near enough bloody rivets, of any size, any way! I see they come in boxes of 100? That'll do me.

But, exactly what should I send for, please? Anyone really read up on rivets?

    Thanks :)

Space the rivet with a washer, it will be fine.

That's my concern though. I'm feeling the distance between the 'sandwich' of materials is just a bit much for the length of hat, on my (presumably?) absolutely bog standard rivets.

I don't want to be struggling, and like every third rivet just pulling out because it hasn't got enough 'exploded' on the blind side.

    could you bolt it together

    Technically? Probably.

But, that said? I'd probably have to raid a Mechano set to get such tiny nuts and bolts. Then, I'd need to hire a ten year old girl, to have the eyes and fingers to fiddle it all together. I know I'd take a month trying. Before putting my fists through the whole thing.

Riveting is just so handy ~ once ye get it all set up. And there's a shed ton of rivets to be done.

Are you looking to order them online Stigura? There are loads of 'assortment' sets that have a variety of lengths

OMG! Cletus, that link was the material! One day, I must add just such a nice little compartment box to my collection too. It'll look great, when they find me and start going through my tools :D

But, for now? Those things are rather more like what a wife would buy ye. 'BIG Assortment of Screws! All Sorts And Sizes! From K Tel! As seen on TV!'

But, we're Men. We don't buy little, plastic bags of six screws. Nor do we buy 'Assortments'. We figure out what we need for a specific job. Then we buy big, manly boxes of that schit!

If I can just sort out exactly which rivets I need for This job? I'll buy a ton of Them. Not a mix and match box which Might happen to have a dozen of the ones I need.

It's really all down to Head size, from what I can make out.

Bit of light reading. What it comes down to is you're the only one who'll know what size you need, but that link should help you figure it out. Once you have it calculated, you can buy 4 buckets of them from eBay...

That's bloody Brilliant! THANKS! :D I'll sort it out, tomorrow, and shall get Exactly the rivets I need. ('Relaxing' now ;))

What a fantastic reference! I reckon they oughta sticky that one! :)

:) Right, so..... They do a 2.4mm rivet that would be perfect for my 2.5 holes.

My only question now is the exact Length to go for. As that isn't a strict given. And that site doesn't offer any exact formula. But, my job is 5mm thick. So ..... 8mm? 10 ...??

Think I'll hang fire and have a crafty word with Eustace, before sending for a hundred best guesses.

Wonder what the chances are of the shop holding exactly what I end up needing? Never took any notice before. Because I didn't know anything about rivets.
