    Hi,

I've noticed quite a few new G wagons in Ireland.

Does anyone know what the base spec (not G63) starts at? There are no details on any of the Mercedes Ireland websites.

At a ballpark guess I'd say €130k starting, they start at £93,250.00 (€110k) in UK.

Cool, thanks for that. Only €20k VRT on top of the €110k?

Your £93k becomes roughly €110k, then the VAT differential brings that to €126000

The G Wagen would be in the 36% VRT bracket, so:

    €198,000 is your total (roughly)
36% of that is your VRT = €71,280
Of the €126k, €29,150 of that is Irish VAT, you’d be claiming the UK VAT back.

    So basically, €100k to Revenue

Not quite... I value how I spend my money, and determine what value is.

    Is it a €100k or €200k SUV?

Will I buy a Range Rover or a G Wagon?

If it was €100k, i'd buy the G Wagon... if the G Wagon was €200k i'd buy a RR, as I don't believe the G Wagon is worth €200k... simple value principles.

Not everyone has a sugar daddy... hence I value how I spend my money.

All well and good but there is no value in a 100k + car by definition. Many billionaires only drive only drive 40k cars.
Incidentally if you do have the cash go to a BMW dealer and sit in a 80k x5 and then in a 100k 7 series. The 7 feels a million times better. I haven't tried the Merc equivalent but I'm sure same is applicable to S class versus their SUVs. Also the G is a very old design why anyone would pay even a 100 for a G63 is mind boggling.

I'm sorry but that is total BS, they may have a lower end run around but I'd be pretty sure they'd have at least one 100k+ motor in their many, many garages around the world. Hopefully to drive but also as an investment in many cases.

That's great, when they make an SUV that feels like a high end saloon the op will have the perfect car but for the moment they are looking at an SUV.

I'd be with you on this, personally I couldn't spend that sort of money on a G63 but that being said there are people who see anyone spending even half that on a car as needing to be psychologically assessed. Hopefully the OP just likes the G63 and appreciates the history of that model and its rarity.

€161,260 - €256,840 in the new car section of carzone.ie

Just to be clear its 161,260 for the 350D OR 256,840 for the 63AMG..

..which is fine as the oil burner is the one you'd want.

    .

Hey? Jeff Bezos of Amazon drives an Accord and Buffet drives a mid level Cadillac. The Ikea guy drove a battered Volvo estate.
Many people at that level actually take pride in a lean lifestyle and shun Ferraris and Lambos.
Fair play to anyone spending big dollars on a new motor so the rest of us can enjoy them. I'm picking up a 500sel tomorrow that was around 270000 euros in today's money back in 1992 so that's even more than a G63 new today. According to Revenue the rate of depreciation is 98% which reinforces my point that there is limited value in high dollar motors.

I'd say alot of well known billionaires have a "modest" car to try and escape the spotlight.......but I doubt they get much use.

There are over 2,000 billionaires and 47 million millionaires in the world. One or two anecdotes doesn't prove things one way or another.

Value isn't limited to money. Value could be the enjoyment gotten from owning and driving a very nice car.

if you want to actually drive in comfort buy the range rover. The G wagon is fun , but is very much still an old school SUV till the new one this year.

many g-wagons here are old ones facelifted to look new on the outside.

    :-) lol

I like the G Wagon because of the old boxy / less flashy design. It's a timeless design IMO.

As for billionaires driving low end cars... they might daily a low end car but all of them have super cars tucked away.

Bill Gates has always been perceived as a 'normal guy' driving 'normal cars', however not only does he have a significant collection of super cars... he spent years after years trying to get a limited edition Porsche 959 into the US... full story here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0AkWYWfPEE

    Hats off to him.

The ones being retailed now are the new model (W463) I had a good sticky beak around a 192 plater at Leopardstown last week.

Isn’t the new one still pretty much the old one despite allegedly being completely different?

The all-new 2019 G-Class shares only five components with the old model: Headlamp washers, outside door handles, sun visors, D-pillar vents, and the spare tire cover. It’s a few inches longer and wider than the old one, on a wheelbase stretched 1.6 inches and a track widened by a massive five inches.

    -Road and Track

It was designed to ape the old one, because thats the classic look that is desired, but as a driving tool its new everything under the skin, steering, suspension, ride, tech etc...

That sounds about right. Smith and Sniff reviewed one a few months ago.

Surprised at this to be honest. Thought the Range rover would get owned.

    New.

Why are people confused by this? Mercedes are, unsurprisingly, only retailing the new model as new!

Yes there are some eye-watering prices asked for recent old models 17,18 etc but they are second hand machines.
