Hi all......starting a new job in January with a 25km each way drive

Looking at buying my own 2nd hand car and am looking for ideas. My big worry is that I don’t really know what makes to avoid and whether I need petrol or diesel

Any recommendations to keep an eye on...... ..?

I will also be branching out on my own insurance having been on my parents as name driver for past 5 years so got to be conscious of that as well when selecting engine size etc

Many thanks in advance and Happy New Yea4 to all

I suggested this in another thread. My mother's former car.

Reasonably easy to insure, cheap to tax, excellent on fuel and the auto box is a joy. My wife had one too and she reckons it was the best car she ever owned.

You've about 12000kms a year drive with work so I'm going to guess total of about 20000kms a year.
Taking something like a vw golf, the difference in fuel costs will be about 800 euro a year ,1400 euro for diesel and 2200 for petrol based on 50mpg for diesel and 35mpg for petrol, which would be fairly typical. With diesel possibly, and I mean possibly, going to be unpopular in a few years I'd go with the petrol option. You should probably get a petrol a bit cheaper than a diesel too, like for like. I'd be looking at something like a golf, also focus. If you like something a bit more premium or anything look at audi a3. Unfortunately I've no idea what insurance is going to be like for you.

What car have you driven under parents policy and would you like to keep driving something similar?

Avoid a 6 year old overpriced out of warranty diesel 1 series BMW anyway

Mechanics dont call them ( Bring Money Withyou ) without reason

Buy something with a manufacture warranty, petrol, korean/jap preferably if it's hassle free driving you want, if not that BMW is a good choice :)

1-2 year old Kia/Hyundai will have years of warranty left and will be between 12-14k

182/191 Kia Rio or something for 13k would be my choice, but i'm very sensible, someone will call that boring and recommend a 9 year old Audi soon

Insured previously on an 2012 Octavia 1.6 in diesel.

So size is not a problem as was well able to handle same.

The Focus appeals to me rather than say Hyundai’s or Kia small cars.

My cousin has a Corolla that she happy with... so that on my list as we

Corolla/Auris or even Lexux CT200H would be a great choice

Ah jaysus, could you not recommend something better than a base spec Kia Rio.

A Ct200h would be a very nice choice. Stylish, nicely specced and above all relaibale.

I'd say buy as new as possible or brand new and have trouble free motoring for 10 years. Unless your good at servicing and fixing cars yourself you run a Risk with a used car out of warranty.
You could get a new Ford ka+ for that kind or money of your very close to a fiesta base price.

Trouble free motoring is all that would bother me

That Rio would go and go

    Agree on CT200h, nice car

What type of driving is the 25km? City/motorway/mixed?

Seat Leon FR 1.4tsi would be my choice. Enough go for daily driving, 6 speed gearbox for economy, good spec and will have the same basic controls as the Octavia that you're used to. Should crack 40mpg with normal use anyway

A Honda Civic is worth considering also, something like this:

    https://www.carsireland.ie/detail.php?ad_id=2397084&r=s.php%3Fm%5B%5D%3D32%26o%5B%5D%3D282%26f%3D1%26yn%3D2015%26yx%3D2016%26g%3D0

1.4 litre engine is not going to win any races but they are decent on fuel and will probably suit the OP around insurance anyway.

Auris hybrid or CT200H, same powertrain between the two, difference is mostly spec.
