Motor Tax expired months ago, selling now...

The Motor Tax disc on my 161D VW Golf expired Feb 2019. Insurance expired June 2019. It has not been driven since Feb19 (I've been abroad). I didn't declare it off the road or do anything with it. My mistake.

I'm back now and am finally getting around to selling it.

Question is... do I have to back tax it to Feb19 or can I get a Garda letter or anything just to allow me to get it back temporarily on the road so I can sell it?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sell your car with the tax expired. New owner only becomes liable for the tax from the date of their ownership of the car. Revenue will not come after you (or the new owner)for the months when the car was untaxed. Only if you retain ownership and choose to tax the car will revenue require you to pay the untaxed months

For the cost of the tax I’d nearly pay the back tax as it will make it less sketchy looking to a perspective buyer,

Keep in mind if there is no insurance on the car, it may not be covered by the buyers insurance, even then it would usually be only 3rd party.

Would be worth getting it NCTd as well, if you want to get good money for it,

Due in February I’d say, which is a few weeks away. Car should be tested now if there’s any hope of getting all the money for it.
