Building a beast - video editing/Lab PC/VMs/Gaming

    Hi folks,

Looking to build a bit of a beast with no real set budget but not overdoing it.

It will be running multiple VMs(roughly 7)ESXI/video editing software and used for gaming. It will be constantly powered on and don’t want to be powering down VMs if I’m gaming for resources.

From doing a bit of research I think the base line should be a AMD Ryzen 3900X 64GB of Ram and four 1 TB SSDs, one for gaming, one for Vm lab, one for windows and one for backups.

I’m clueless when it comes to the rest of the parts on whats the best to buy so any help sppreciated.

I don’t need an outrageous graphics card, the best bang for buck would do.

First issue I can see is that there are no AMD motherboards with 4x M.2 slots (and only 9 X570 boards have 3x).
Maybe go with 1x NVMe for the VMs and then a 2Tb for Windows/games (SATA or NVMe, doesn't really matter) unless you buy a controller card.
Backups, I'm not the man to ask - just make sure you have an off-site solution as well.

For PSU the Seasonic Prime Ultra Gold/ Ultra Platinum series have a industry-leading 12 year warranty & don't cost outrageous prices.

CPU cooler, Noctua probably have the best customer support but basically if it costs over €50 it's decent.

Make sure the RAM comes as a kit. Can be 2 sticks or 4, either way on 3900X you'll be limited to dual-channel.

GPU "best bang for buck" is probably GTX 1660 Super, or AMD RX 5700.

Thanks, gives me something to work off, I’ll do a bit more digging and post the final build here before hitting the buy button.

Did a bit of digging and this is what i came up with. I can throw 800 dollars at the graphics card. Max budget it 2800 dollars, thought i would be closer to this figure with all the stuff so more room for graphics card.. TV will be hooked up this TV. samsung.com/us/televisions-home-theater/tvs/qled-4k-tvs/65--class-q80r-qled-smart-4k-uhd-tv--2019--qn65q80rafxza/

One thing i am concerned about is noise so want it as quite as possible.

Don't have anything positive to add, just being nosey but why would you need to run so many vm's?

    🙈🙉🙊

Cisco, Linux, Windows server, Vmware, SQL Server, Pen testing etc environment to do training videos in. Also a bit of video editing.

Its grand to have, not really that expensive really when you consider how much people spend on a car, I'd rather a 5K car than a new one and the latest gadgets.

Many thanks for this, really appreciate the help, gonna order now. I will post a few pics and benchmarks when its up and running.

Yea the price different overall is absolutly crazy here. Tv's for 800 euro in Ireland are going for 400 dollars here. Everything is just cheaper.

Oh, forgot to add an extra 140mm fan - GN's review suggests 2x fans so the CPU gets good air instead of having it all stolen by the GPU.
