Grinding noise left rear

    Hi folks,

Shortly before getting the annual service about 10 months ago I developed an annoying squeak in my left rear. Used to happen periodically and it might last for a few miles and then go away.

Lads in the garage doing the service said they couldn't find anything. Nothing popped up on the NCT shortly before the service, and maybe a couple of weeks later it went away altogether.

A couple of days ago this clunking noise started when braking. This developed into a scraping sound as the car slows to a halt, and when it speeds up again. It disappears as I get up above 30km/h and it doesn't happen if I touch the brakes at higher speeds.

Any advice on what this might be?

Sounds like it’s related to the brakes. Sometimes the pads wear the discs and the outer ridge of the discs scrape against the pads or caliper. What car is it?

Start with the obvious. What condition are the brake pads and discs in?

During last annual service in March there was nothing wrong with them. Fairly light use mostly motorway miles and I'm fairly kind to the brakes.

No warning light yet to say pads are running low.

I wouldn't be driving anywhere until I had the wheel off and look at the brakes. I'm not sure if you know what to look for but if you take some photos and post them up, we may be able to help.

Would be fairly certain it’s brake pads or ridge on brake discs

    Thanks folks.

I'll have her parked up for a couple of days over Christmas anyway.

I was trying to figure out if this is potentially something urgent that I need to get examined immediately or if I could get a week or so out of it until the new year.

Secondly the mechanics didn't find anything last time so I can at least point them in the right direction now if they're still scratching their heads!

Sounds like the pads on that wheel maybe something stuck between them and the disk or part of the pad has cracked or broken up. Might not be obvious without removing them. Replacement should have coppergrease on the back of the pads to reduce noise

The last time they were looked at was March--That's nine months ago. A lot of wear can be put on brakes pads in 9 months.
You also don't always get a wear warning light if pads are wearing unevenly.

Id put money on it the inside pad is worn down to the metal causing your scraping noise.

Yeah pad is prob morning doen but you can be 100 percent sure that the cause of that is that it will need a rear brake caliper replaced.very common problem on the golfs and anytime where doing rear brakes on them they always nearly need at least one brake caliper replaced

could be a stone in the pads, I had to replace pads and discs on a 20 month old car

The car went through its 2nd service and the main dealer missed the disintergrated triangulated rear inside pad even after i had asked them to remove wheel for full inspection

Thanks for all your help. Finally got a chance to get this done given the time of year.

Very simply the pads, discs and calipers needed to be replaced. Apparently this caliper issue is indeed a very common issue with the VW Golf.

As to why I didn't get a warning light - advised that the pad sensor was on the opposite wheel to the one that wore down and was also quite close to needing replacement also.
