    Lads,
Looking to pick up a banger to tied me over for a few months.
One option I have is an ‘98 automatic Corolla, petrol. Generally what is the autobox like in these. Any issues, what should I look out for?

    Thanks.

I know that, thanks. Just looking for thoughts on the automatic version as I haven’t came across one before.

If it's working and no noticeable slipping etc should be fine, won't rock your world and fuel economy will be hit a little.

Just give it a good spin make sure all working.

I have a classic policy so I’ll be sticking it on that.

1.4 I presume. The manual corolla of that vintage struggles, I can imagine the auto would make an already gutless car even more painful to drive.

    1.3 I’d say!

There's very little to go wrong. It's a slow auto, little heavy on petrol but a bullet proof engine. All very old at this stage but they're perfect for a to b motoring if that's all you need. I'd personally like one to keep at this stage. Given the age, difficulty to insure and the market for these it's worth a few hundred at best so don't overpay.

Remember been a young fella thinking it was the best thing ever to be driving ex cop corolla or moving them from yards etc....

I've said it before here, but any pre 00 car you see on the road on a normal day is odds on to be a Corolla of that vintage. They must be made of solid iron.

It's not that bad, much faster than 1.4 golfs of that vintage and even much newer.

Went to view today. Didn’t even take it for a spin.
    All round bad shape.
Went to look at a 98 Suzuki Wagon all was looking promising until I took it for a spin. Clutch seemed to be slipping, or something.
    Anyway the search continues.

Buy something cool that will still go on your classic policy.

Would assume that Toyota auto boxes of that era were all pretty much the same, hopefully the filter and ATF have been changed as it was the only crisis that hit my 96 Camry in its life taxiing.

Just read the search goes on, well the point will stand if you look at Toyota's I suppose.

Thinking of going to look at a 98 Volvo S40, auto.
About 7 months test and low mileage. Looking 800 notes for it.
    Any thoughts on these?
    Thanks.

They have two cars for sale, both with photos taken on the side of a road not in a garden etc. I’d avoid

Yep just noticed that. Think I’ll keep looking so.

For clarity I’m looking for something 20+ years old with at least 4 months test. Not planning on spending more than 500 but would go a bit more for a good one. I’m keeping an eye on both the banger and cheapo threads but if someone would like to suggest something I’d appreciate it.
    Thanks.
