I'm looking at buying an Android watch in the next while

I'm a bit confused by how the 4G/LTE versions work - do you need a SIM card and does it need any operator support or does it just mirror/leverage your phone's connection?

Is it worth paying the extra for a 4G version?

It's handy if you want to go out without a phone. You need to swap your sim from your phone to the watch before you head out. There's not a lot about which one are you looking at.
I've the Huawei watch 2, there's 2 versions one that takes a sim and one that doesn't.

Thanks. It's actually the Huawei I'm looking at, I figure it makes sense given I have a P20 Pro.

Dunno if I would be bothered swapping out SIM cards.

There's a couple of threads on it here's one...don't over pay for it you should be able to pick up one very right in the next few days https://touch.boards.ie/thread/2057936045
If your don't need a standalone phone watch maybe have a look at some of the eink ones appearing as you'd have a very long batter life...all depends on what you want to do with it.

Ireland doesnt have companion sims. Until we do LTE watches are totally pointless.

Could have two numbers? Two EIR tenner plans is great value.

It's easy swap Sims I've done it loads of times it still works as an ordinary smartwatch without a sim. I use it for concerts that kind of thing when I want nothing only some cash in my pocket.
To use what's app on it in standalone mode you leave your phone at home connected to WiFi and head off with your sim in the watch that's really the only app you need to do that for.
