There is a thread to read about buying from the UK.

No Brexit implications, yet. If he gets it done before end of Jan 2020 shouldn't be.

Afaik, still no VRT charges when re-registering it in Ireland.

When I say an EV has no VRT charges, they actually do, but they also got a e5,000 rebate from the Government.

So effectively it was free to the owner, as only top end EVs like some Tesla's had a high enough VRT figure to be above 5,000, incurring a cost to the owner.

afaik, the rebate is still active?

Yeah at least to the end of 2021 currently

There are some examples on the revenues website https://www.revenue.ie/en/importing-vehicles-duty-free-allowances/guide-to-vrt/calculating-vrt/electric-and-hybrid-vehicles.aspx

Thought I throw this in here.

The MOT is transferable and you get a valid NCT cert. in lieu.
Is the NCT cert. only valid for the length of time the MOT cert. was valid?
Or would it last for 2 years from the date of the MOT, if the car being imported is less than 10 years old?

It transfers and you get the remainder of the MOT as an NCT, so the maximum you can get is 12 months if the car just had its MOT.

This is coming to an end tho because of Brexit as the MOT will no longer be recognised by the EU

    Good stuff.

Actually, it still costs €16 to transfer it across.
So you might be better off getting the car NCT'd straight away, and getting straight onto the 2 year cycle.

    Kinda thinking out loud!

Whatever is on the MOT, gets transferred.
I done it for an F10 recently.

    Its also free of charge.
Check the dates too as it may not correspond to the normal dates for NCT renewal etc

For example, I bought a September 2014 520d in January. IT had an MOT until August 2019. So not tie to the first registration date.

Its actually free. They haven't started charging for it yet.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

It's waived. You don't have to pay anything. I've done it twice in the last year and a bit.

Beware though once you put it through the actual NCT over here, it can be a lot stricter than the MOT. Don't buy a car with an MOT presuming it will pass a test here also.

When paying the garage in NI for the car, do not use your bank

For an arbitrary figure of 20K stg, it would have cost me 700e more to use my bank, vs using a transfer company. There are several companies that do this, search for the word "transfermate" on this forum, there is a thread on the subject
