I'm considering importing a 2010 BMW Alpina B3 Bi-Turbo, just the VRT calculator doesn't have Alpina versions and no option that I can see to get an estimate. Has anyone imported an Alpina or is it as bad as I've heard and they'll look for crazy money?

Yes. The idiots employed by revenue to determine VRT on rarer/less common cars basically pick a number, double it and add on 10%. In the few examples I’ve come across there is no rhyme nor reason for the figure people have been given, it’s a random number and suggests the OMSP for that car is more than double or higher than the actual value.

No chance of getting an estimate from the Revenue.

You have to take the gamble, import and then let Revenue pick a figure from the air, and then appeal.

Par for the course in this car hating nation of ours, where anything other than a hateful 520d is criminalised.

Check to see if you can find a similar car on an import broker's website and there may be a VRT estimate listed. The last car I brought in wasn't listed but the broker's estimate was only €14 off the official VRT price.

If you can prove it's too high then you can appeal after paying the initial high figure. You will need to find a similar cheaper one for sale here though which will be a challenge.
