Problem with spring loaded door closer

    Hi

I installed a spring loaded door closer on a downstairs bathroom door last night. It works fine except that if I open the door beyond about 75 degrees the door will get scratched as the pin will slide off the holder. So I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to prevent this.

I can't attach pictures or include links as I am new to this forum so it's a bit hard to explain.. but the door closer is almost identical to the first result if you search Amazon for "Quieting Surface Mounted Spring Loaded Door Closer Adjustable Fire Rated with 1/2 Hour Fire Rating White".

On the video on Youtube that's the first result when you search for "How to install an automatic safety door closer" you can see one being fitted, but at the end when he leaves the room he only opens the door a little. In my case, as you open the door wider, the metal bar slides further to the right, and eventually slips out of the holder (the bit screwed into the door itself) and scratches the door paint. So if I could get a wider 'holder' to replace the one on the door that might work. I was thinking I could get something like this conduit (search
Woodies site for "Round 20mm X 3m Conduit") and cut it down the middle and use that.

I could probably just leave it alone and we'll get used to it, but I know that sooner or later the door will get scratched... so any suggestions are appreciated. By the way I know there are spring hinges that could do the job but I'd rather avoid that if I can.

    Thanks!

You’ve obviously moved the holder as far away as possible from the hinges?

Thanks for the reply Colm. Yeah I've moved it as far as possible, when the door is closed the pin barely reaches as far as the holder.

Is the closer sitting flush with the door, or is it mounted to an architrave so is sticking out?

Move the spring mechanism(mounted on the jam or architrave) as close as possible to the door.

It isnt that hard to reposition the hinges so the door closes under its own weight..

    Hi

Thanks for the replies. Only getting back to this today, sorry. The closer was mounted on the architrave so it was sticking out about half an inch. The architrave is 2.5 or 3 inches wide with a pattern/grooves near the door and then flat on the outer edge. I had screwed the the spring mechanism to the flat part so I tried moving it in and that helped a little bit. But in the end whizbang your suggestion prompted me to a bit of Googling and I stuck a folded up bit of cardboard in behind the upper hinge and now things are improved. Before the door was swinging open whereas now it stays wherever it's left. That's good enough as what was happening before was people were pushing the door behind them as they left the bathroom but if they didn't fully close it it would swing open. So now they door will sit a couple of inches open. I have two small kids so this also avoids the risk of them catching their fingers if the door is swinging closed by itself. Anyway thanks for the advice folks, happy xmas
