Toyota Avensis key fob battery

I have a 07 avensis. The key was beginning to take a few presses to lock or unlock so battery is dying. I opened up the key and changed the battery for the same battery (cr2016 3 volt) but a different make. The old one was a Sony, the new one is a energizer. But the key won’t work with the new battery. I can swap the old one back in and it works fine. Any ideas? It’s hardly smart enough to detect a new battery and need to be resynced or something or do I just need to try a different battery make?

    Thanks

It is not the battery make, it's something else causing the new issue.
Are you sure the new battery is charged? Is it brand new?

Yeah literally just bought the new ones today. Very weird. Two in the pack. Same issue with each. Then put the old one back in and it works.

I'd bring the new batteries back along with the old battery and the fob.
Blame the new batteries and let the people in the shop help you.
Was it Halfords? They are usually quite friendly if you treat them nice.

Woodies are very cheap for those key batteries by the way.

Bring it into lock doctor if he’s near you.2 minutes and he has a machine in shop for testing it.cheap too less than a tenner fitted and tested

Thanks Everyone, I bought the batteries in woodies. I might bring the key and the batteries back there and see if a different set works. So odd

You can see if they're putting out 3V with a multimeter if you have one.

Was the old one a 2016 also, or 2032?
They are both 3v, but the 2016 is only 1.6mm thick, while the 2032 is 3.2 mm thick, so a 2016 would not be thick enough to make contact

Defo a 2016. It’s an exact match. Don’t have a multimeter unfortunately but I wonder whats the likelyhood of two dodgey batteries in one pack.

Curiosity just got the better of me. I have the same key and I just opened it to check. It is indeed a 2016.

No matter how big the pack is, if it's out of date, all batteries are likely to be dead.

I went back today and got a new set of batteries. And guess what? It worked! So it was simply a set of dud batteries from the shop. Thanks everyone.
