Rent a car long term (1-3 months)

I have been living abroad for 7 years so I have never even driven in Ireland never mind bought/rented! (I am an experienced driver here in Asia though).

I’m hoping someone can offer me some advice on this plan....

I will be returning to live in Ireland in 2021. While I look for employment I would rather rent a car than commit to buying. It would be for at least one month.

Would anyone know a rough cost of renting a medium sized automatic car for one month? Im not fussed about make or model for renting.

How would insurance work? Will that be built into the price/provided by the car renting company? Or would I need to organize serpately?

When I return I will be driving on my Asian license. Legally I can do this for one year, but would it be an issue for the company?

Thank you for Amy advice you can offer.

An automatic VW UP from Hertz is €750 for 28 days, a Ford Focus is €1000. You should look at GoCar.ie as you would only be paying for when you are actually using the car. Fuel and insurance is built into the price. They are all over Dublin and are about €10 per day. I’m not sure about the driving license situation with them tho. Almost certain Hertz will accept your driving license and insurance is built in

Off season..., it is cheap to rent cars, but use one of the websites like argosrental or carental com, and shoud cost less than €10 per day.
However, u can only rent for 2 weeks at a time...then rince and repeat..
And take out excess insurance for about €50 per year.

What company does the yearly excess?

I think my last policy was with Blue insurance, c. €50. I'm sure there's others.

Bear in mind you have to pay the excess and claim it back with these policies though, unlike the car rental excess insurance.

Check if the yearly excess is ok for for renting cars in Ireland, if you live here.

https://www.carhireexcess.ie/ for an annual excess insurance. Should be around €50. Claimed back from them on two occasions without hassle.

Also check the Enterprise for long term car hire.

AIG car hire excess, €50 for the year , for europe I think,
not sure what worldwide or USA is.

Only downside is the car rent companies hold €1500-€2000 on your credit card for the period of the rental, and will take that if u write off the car, and u claim it back from the insurance.

I have done this on a few occasions when needed second car. As I live near the airport it was relatively easy as cars cheapest there. Main things..

Off peak months were seriously cheap. Especially as I could adjust my bookings for holiday periods when only needed one car.

Need the separate excess policy and sufficient credit on the credit card.

Book up to a max of 28 days at a time. Not sure why but price always jumped after that..

I always found the cartrawler search engine the best value.

    https://book.cartrawler.com/mobile.car.php?client=6827#/searchcars

Think Ryanair use this on their page.

Anyway if can be surprisingly cheap if not at peak times..great option I found it especially as I was near Dublin airport with lots of options.

Just did a search there for Sun 5th Jan for 4 weeks and only 300 for a five door astra style car!

What country is your licence from in Asia ? You need to see if it will be acceptable here. I'm open to correction but thought there are one or two countries that insurers wont do here.

Used to do the same for two years . Off session rented from Shannon airport rented for 50 a week. D class car saloons. Booked serval weeks in advance and all staff got to know me . So check in and out got much quicker.

Peak season in limerick city got weekend special for 30 for two days. Booked in advance January cancelled last min if I did not need it. For city one the guys would drop me to work after I checked it in.
