The NTA have announced two new city bus services in Kilkenny (ref: https://www.nationaltransport.ie/news/new-kilkenny-city-bus-services-to-commence-on-18-december/)

Their post just says that the services will be provided by City Direct, but gives no more details about the operator.

The local newspaper article - from August - says that the Kilkenny County Council chose the operator (eh? since when did councils here do that) - ref https://kilkennynow.ie/new-bus-service-to-link-41-parts-of-the-city/ - and that it is indeed Galway's City Direct.

    What's really going on here?

Sounds to me like someone trying to take credit for something that they were not involved with as much as they claimed as an election is around the corner!

The Council are involved in the service though (to what extent though is unknown).

The tender documents (which was drawn up in consultation with the Council) unusually notes the contract as being between the successful bidder and jointly between the NTA and the Council.
“Operator” means the successful Contracting Entity with whom the Authority and the Council will enter into a Services Agreement for the provision of the Services

If the contract is between both the NTA and the Council then the Council would have input in the award of such, though it would not be exclusive.

The Council has also (again unusually) been responsible for providing the infrastructure (bus stops) for the service as opposed to the NTA.

There is definitely a Council involvement in this service, and note the quote on the NTA website:-
Kilkenny County Council is delighted to have partnered with the NTA in the delivery of the city bus services

Strange not to hear of a JJ Kavanagh involvement ?

This article shows a picture of a Wright Streetlite in TFI livery.

Although it contains a quote from Anne Graham, describing the bus as 'comfortable' and 'state-of-the-art', which is the exact opposite of the Streetlite.

Some bus gates on John street and the bridge are needed otherwise it won't be reliable.
