has this car got a timing belt...or chain ?.....how long would either case last ?.....and what is the recommended oil change intervals ?

    SKODA OCTAVIA AMBIENTE 1.4 (1390) 75HP (year 2005)

    155,000 miles on clock.

thanks in advance for any replies. (a car thats advertised for sale near me, but seller hasnt got belt knowledge, and no obvious markings on engine)

That would be a belt. 100k km interval iirc.

Oil every 10k miles or 15k km.

That's high mileage for that engine I'd thread very cautiously as they start to burn oil and are practically impossible to get through the emissions test in the NCT.

As above they’re a belt but that’s a soft enough engine, I’d be looking at a Corolla or something instead. If it must be a petrol Octavia then I’d probably go for a 1.6 - There are a good few out there I think.

1.6 8 valve is also timing belt.

    i left it.

a mechanic looked at it (sellers mechanic) and said timing belt looked good, but his advice was to get timing belt kit changed anyway as he would, even if it looked ok....he explained that mileage of belt may not be written on engine as it may be set for a dash warning notice instead (??)....but no definite evidence of it being changed.
on top of that its due a service....15,000km since last oil change.

so...i dunno...with labour what could that mount up to....200 euros to be spent after buying it ??

i told seller this, and said i was going to hang back, as its automatically made car that much more expensive than anticipated...i may have changed oil and filter anyway in fairness.....but his eagerness for me to buy it was troubling me too...too pushy with me to take it, made me wonder was i missing something obvious with it.

lets say, he wasnt very happy to say the least..and colourful language was used...and i'm a time waster......i was genuinely interested though.

car was only 700 euros and only a second runaround car for the house here.

On a €700 car you just drive it and if the belt goes it goes.

I had a mk5 04 Golf with the 1.4 engine from new. It had 240k miles on it, when I finally scrapped it this year. The only engine issues were the coil packs. Yes it burned oil from low enough mileage, but I always kept an eye on it and it got serviced on time with the recommended oil. Now I may not have risked keeping it that long had I not known it's history from new.
