RAM fails memtest at rated speeds

I bought a Gigabyte X570 Gaming X motherboard during the black friday sales. I also bought 2x8GB of Patriot Viper ram, which is on the list of supported memory.

I have flashed the latest bios.

If i run the chip at 3000mhz or faster it fails memtest. Would I be right in thinking that it's just a bad chip and I should RMA it. If so should I go for the same thing again, or upgrade slightly to Corsair Vengence LPX instead? Any other recommendations/suggestions would be great!

    Thanks!

EDIT: Bah! There's a new bios as of 2 days ago which 'improves memory compatibility'. Let me install that so I'm no longer a liar ;) I assume it won't make a difference in my case though.

EDIT2: Updated bios did nothing for me, as i would've expected. The max stable speed is 2933 at 16-16-16-34. I can get at least 2 full memtest passes at that rating. I'll run a few more when I don't need the computer and see how it pans out.

Did you try running the xmp profile?

Yup. I flipped on XMP in the bios, it went straight to it's rated 3200 and then failed to post. It'll post at 3066 but is super unstable. It's slightly unstable at 3000. It hasn't failed memtest at 2933 so far and apps have stopped crashing frequently

This story just had a surprise ending.

I was in touch with ccl about returning the RAM and they gave me the details and said I'd be liable for postage if I returned the RAM and it was found to be OK.

I decided I should try and double check the ram in a different motherboard. I remembered my media centre has a Ryzen 3 2200g/B350 which I could pop the RAM into. I tested the theory and the new RAM seemed stable in the old motherboard, and the old RAM seemed stable in the new motherboard.

I swapped everything back around and now the new ram seems rock solid. There are two answers:

    1) I hadn't pushed the ram in fully the first time round.
    2) I accidentally used slots 1+3 instead of 2+4 the first time around and that made it more unstable.

Slots 2+4 are marked as 'use first' on the motherboard, so how likely is it that using 1+3 would cause the instability? The internet seems a little vague on that answer.

Either way, I'm happy it's stable! I've even got the RAM overclocked to 3400MHZ now, with the timings tightened a tad, and it *still* appears stable to memtest!

1+3 or 2+4 doesn't matter so long as they are paired, if you did 1+2 or 3+4 then you'd have a problem. Most likely the sticks weren't fully pushed in.

Quick one - did you try setting the RAM voltage to 1.35v?

I'm having the same problem with that x570 board and 3200 MHZ Vengence LPX ram.

Any time I use the XMP profile at the rated clock speed (3200) my system becomes really unstable. Takes ages to boot, crashes etc.

Bios is the latest, ram is in the correct slots (2+4) and inserted correctly. Don't have another board or ram to swap around unfortunately.

    It has me stumped!

How is the system without XMP enabled?

Yup. The XMP profile also sets it to 1.35, but i did try it manually too. I didn't overvolt it though as I figured if it fails at stock voltage I'd be better off replacing it with one that works.

Yakult - you could try 1 stick at a time and see if it'll POST and pass the standard 4 rounds of memcheck. Also, try putting in both but use slots 1+3 instead of 2+4. I was about to do that myself when everything suddenly started working again!

If both sticks fail throughout those combinations, then your best bet would be to return the RAM and get another manufacturer and see if that helps.

I started having similar issues with B450 and Vengeance LPX 3200MHz. Everything was working fine for a few months, but then I started getting bluescreens. Tried with and without XMP, but that didn't make a difference. So I ran memtest86, and that got aborted due to "too many errors". Removed one stick, and no more errors or crashes, so I guess one of the sticks broke or something. Going to try RMA'ing it after the holidays.

B450 too and lots of blue screens for us too. Ram has passed multiple memtest passes. Putting it down to ****ty MSI bios as all drivers are up to date too.
