VRT question

    Hi Folks,
Can I ask a quick question of behalf of my sister in law. She's visiting UK over xmas and plans to buy an electric car there, to be transported over by car haulage company. The particular model she's buying, is a 2018 VW Golf
value 21,000 sterling approx. (She's buying it off a friend privately)
She's worried about having to pay VRT, am I right in thinking that there's no VRT on imported used electric cars ?
It's not possible to contact the VRT office by phone and the revenue website only deals with ICE cars.
    Thanks in advance.

It's not "no vrt" but a 5000 euro vrt exemption. The revenue website should give a good estimate of what it should be

I done an typical example and the calculation came back of 0 vrt for an e golf with 10000km on the clock

If going for a VRT on an electric car where VRT is €0 does anyone know if there are other charges like an admin fee to pay??

Nothing to pay, you book your appointment with local NCT centre that offer the service, you rock up, they inspect the car and you have nothing to pay, drive away with all documents in the post in the following few days

Brought in a demo 191 in Aug/Sept with 6000kms and paid €300 VRT. All in car came to €27500, to be fair about a month or two later (& after the price decrease) there were a few 191 demos available in Irish dealers for 2k or so more. At this level it’s questionable whether it’s worth the hassle.

€2k pays for insurance, tax and electricity for 2 years!
    Deffo still worth it!

You shouldn't have had to pay VRT as the OMSP of your second hand eGolf was below EUR35k

Dispute the finding and get your EUR300 back
