When buying a used van privately is the change of ownership the same as a car? Do you fill in the back page of the VRC with new owner details and the seller sends the certificate away to Shannon?

    Thanks, that's what I thought.

A friend of mine bought a van yesterday and the owner gave him an RF200 form and said fill that in and tax the van and a new book will be sent out to the new owner. It says its for pre-1993 vehicles only on the form.

I should add that the van was taken into Ireland from the UK in August but he didn't tax it so didn't receive the VRC.

It is on Irish plates already?

That’s a bit of an odd one, the form he gave won’t work.

The original owner needs to tax the van, if the new owner some how manages to tax it the book will go back the original guy.

To be honest it sounds very dodge, hassle the new owner doesn’t need. If he hasn’t bought it I’d be telling him to walk away.

Just an update on this as these types of threads rarely get resolved.

Turns out the RF200 form was accepted by the motor tax office (I think he actually posted everything in) and the new owner was able to tax the van and the new VRC was sent to the new owner. I don't know why they bother having pre-1993 use only written on the form if that isn't the case.
