It's tradition for this time of year to see what albums Boardsies have rated highly during the year.

Not gonna bother with the whole nominating/voting like previous years as interest was waning.

What were your standout Rock & Metal releases in 2019?

The Spell by Cellar Darling is my favourite album of the year, it's rare a 60 minute album feels more like a 40 minute album, followed closely by Legends from Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex by Gloryhammer, as cheesy as it gets, but great fun.

    Others for me:

    Volbeat - Rewind, Replay, Rebound
Beast in Black - From Hell With Love
    Airbourne - Boneshaker
Joanne Shaw Taylor - Reckless Heart

    The Wildhearts - Renaissance Men
    Whiskey Myers - Whiskey Myers
The Dark Element - Songs the Night Sings
Insomnium - Heart Like a Grave

Tonight Alive's 2 albums before they turned pop, not a bad song on them. They are a pop rock female fronted band.

Cult of Luna - A Dawn to Fear
    Alcest - Spiritual Instinct
Blood Incantation - Hidden History of the Human Race
    Mgla - Age of Excuse
Deathspell Omega - The Furnaces of Palingenesia

Also a special mention to Lingua Ignota - Caligula. Despite not being rock or metal, it makes the vast majority of metal seem warm and cuddly in comparison.

I found it a weak enough year tbh :(

Rammstein and Tool's albums were...good. Not amazing by their own very high standards.

Decent releases from Pelican, 65daysofstatic and The Aristocrats as well.

Struggle to rate any of them much higher than 7.5/10.

Haven't listen to Devin Townsend's latest but tbh I've found his last few albums very samey...

Didn't know Alcest had a new release, will give it a listen.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Completely agree. In fact I actually preferred the Lindemann album to the Rammstein one.

    I misread the title.
Album of the year is probably Lacuna Coil - Black Anima, there is nothing great about metal these days, the most interest bands are the ones deep in the underground like Draconian or something. Slipknots album was ok but nothing that would get you sweating with excitement, fanboys worship Corey Taylor and praise him when he gets his average scream back, there are tiny bands in the underground with far superior screams that his cigarette burnt scream. Sometimes it is painful to listen to, especially live back in 2015/16.

Gave it a spin. Great shout. Its no Earth vs or Phuq but pretty decent.
Strongly considering going to the gig in Belfast on the back of it.

Glad you liked it. I think they’re a band that constantly release decent to very good records almost always under the radar. I won’t make it to the Belfast gig myself. I wish they’d come and play in Dublin sometime. Haven’t been down here since 2004.

Strange year of music for me, not a lot grabbed my attention. Sadly the Tool album did nothing for me, two good songs on it imo and I hated the Slipknot album. Didn't know Nile had released anything last year so will definitely check that out. Best albums I've heard are:

    Rival Sons - Feral Roots
    The Wildhearts - Renaissance Men.

    Nothing else comes to mind.
