Hi we have run out of home heating oil and must wait till Monday to get topped up.
Can we use diesel or petrol from a petrol station in the mean time or would this damage the furnace?

Our Oil tank normally takes kerosene.
    Any guidance or advice appreciated.
    Thanks.

You can get drums of Kerosene in some filling stations.

You can use diesel, but it is not advisable. The pressure and nozzle would have been set for kerosene. So it will burn more inefficiently, dirtier and you could get other problems.
Some filling stations stock containers of home heating oil for emergencies. Google might help here.

That's great news, can I ask where one can buy a drum of heating oil?

If any of the local petrol stations supply home heating oil you should be able to get some there.

Only thing is if you ran out, you’ll likely have an airlock & need bleeding.

    Caution
Home heating oil (THE WORDS) is actually what DIESEL is called.

Only get kerosene (pinkish red colour)

Some of the advice above to get HOME HEATING OIL is misleading !!!!

If you indicate what part of the country you're in someone might be able to advise where you can get 20l or 25l drums of kerosene.

If you have a drum (or two or three) or can get them somewhere you might have a wider choice of where to get kerosene as not all suppliers sell drums.

It can be tricky enough to pour from a drum into the central heating tank without splashing / spilling some fuel so a large funnel or cap with a built in tap can be useful.

a small road cone makes a great funnel for this use

    Hi again.

It looks like you are right, the oil came today but the radiators won't heat up. Do you have any advice on how to fix this?

    I can't post pictures or URL's because I'm new?
There is a brass circle piece on the boiler / furnace which has what looks a square on it...It looks like it needs a tool that is the opposite of an Allen key if that makes sense?

There’s a bleed valve on the burner. The best thing to do in your shoes is type your burner make and model (riello is common?) into YouTube, there’s most likely a video showing you how to bleed it. It’s fairly straightforward.

Thanks for the advice, yup that's the boiler, found a video as suggested and it worked thank you!

Fairly easy process in the end.
