Insignia in 'limp' mode

    Hi

2010 Insignia has gone into limp mode, won't go over 60kmp/h in 3rd and loose all power going into 4th. The engine management light came on but no error code.

I assume it would be madness to drive it to my mechanic who is about a hour away? Had similar problems before with the EGR valve and he was able to sort it with some machine he plugs into the car to clear the valve

Will cost about a 100 to get it sorted by my local mechanic

    Thanks!

    What are you asking?

Your car needs to be seen by a competent mechanic.. you know this.

Is it a diesel? Dpf filter probably, get it on s motorway if possible and rev the f€£k out of it, get the engine warm, will burn out the particles in the filter and should return. 5k revs in 4th gear should do it

I'd chance it too, unless you can get your hands on a diagnostic machine off someone first.

My mechanic friend has the diagnostic machine!

Might chance it on the motorway so

Diesel yeah, I need to do that every 4 weeks or so to stop the filter building the particles but I guess I didn't do it for long enough last time.

you do know DPF regens are conrolloed by the engine management software dont you ? i would suspect you need to find that before try to hammer a car up a motorway (whats one of those ?) in limp mode which i suspect isnt teh most sensible option

Happened to mine (2.4 JTDM 159) and after a certain point in being clogged up it wont regen for fear of setting the car on fire. *

    *spoiler, I no longer drive a Diesel.#

#lie. Company car is diesel, but that's only an A to B car that is not my responsibility.

 Waste of time advice ends in waste of time

OP, nobody can actually tell you if it's safe to drive because the fault codes have to be read and cleared.........but you already know this from past experience. Go to a mechanic.

If it's in limp mode because of a DPF failure, there's no point going on the motorway to clear it out. The engine won't let you get the revs above 2.5k and you're not going to regen at that level. Bring it to a mechanic, find out it's EGR or DPF and get it fixed.

Then, speaking from experience, sell the car as quickly as possible.

Check the intercooler to intake manifold hose/pipe for splits, this happens quite often. And if that's the case it will plug the DPF so stop driving it until you sort it out.

Gone to mechanic, hopefully just a DPF regeneration needed. I'll be getting rid of it soon enough, ****ing thing drinks diesel anyway

She being thirsty is also a symptom of a split intercooler pipe.

Wrong! Has happened to me before few times and that's the only way you can clear it (i.e if it's safe to do so), besides ripping the filter out (will fail NCT though) or force regen using diagnostic.

You can't clear it if won't let you build the revs, you need to do this before it goes in limp mode, if it goes into limp mode, you can't clear the particles, not in my car anyway

On my piece of sh!t 2014 Xtrail it happens a bit, it will stay in limp mode if you simply don't hurt it on an open road. It works itself up all hot and bothered :P then it kicks back in. Can take 20/30 mins of 4th gear and foot floored barely getting to 5k revs and then it just kicks in.
Can be dangerous though, there's no warning when it's coming back, nearly shot through a wall when it kicked in all of a sudden

An insignia in limp mode won’t let you get above 3k revs. Your xtrail might be different.

    To fix what exactly?

Did a regeneration, they also had to take out the EGR valve and clean it. They had to use two types of fluids as there was some other issue with the turbo. Fluids alone was well over a 100.

I've little knowledge of cars so when he explained it to me it made sense but I've no idea how to clearly explain it like he did

Okay, you'll need to make sure that car gets a 40 minute drive each week at high revs or you're going to be that mechanic's new BFF.

Does anybody think adding additive to tank to help in keeping it clean is a good idea.
