We,re in the throes of smartening up an old farmhouse, would like to keep it farmhousey . Been looking at piccies on google, but so many ideas are american, not really our scene. We,d really appreciate some ideas, websites, mags, shops, furnishings that would help us along..we gave up on pinterest, was way too annoying. Cheers

Oldsmokey; Pintrest should be dragged to hell and burned there.

That said; I'm fascinated with ye project :)

Needs a shed ton more info though. Are ye not natives? What county is ye house?

" keep it farmhousey "? From what era? How authentic? Not many people I know, today, want to even be associated with the 'farmhousey' effects of a century back.

What ever. I'll be watching this thread. Got myself an old, family farm cottage. Consider it, basically, sacred to the people who built it. Won't put a screw in a wall, unless I consider They'd have done ~ had they had the money to spare.

I try to 'Improve' the place as they would have done :)

Are you talking structural work? Or soft furnishings?

I went to a wedding at Coolbawn Quay in Tipperary earlier this year. There are several houses located at the venue which have been built and decorated to represent houses from maybe about 50+ years ago.

If you were in the region, they would probably show you around to help you make a decision on selecting a venue.

Don't be afraid to knock on the doors of houses which have been similarly done up. they may tell you get lost, but it's surprising how many people are ok with showing off their work/style on new builds or refurbs to people if they think they are straight and are just looking to get ideas.

Ther's a FB group called "Cottageology - Irish Cottage Renovation & Appreciation" which might be a bit useful, but there's not that much interior design on there. I mostly associate Irish cottages with excessive use of "pine" finishes, inappropriate cement re-rendering/damp issues and floor-to-ceiling religious tat. :pac:

French farmhouse/gîte is a good look IMO.

Yup, i get what youre saying...the brits do it quite well too....we,re not taking the whole effect to the fair, just dont want it looking like was built and kitted out a month ago...

Ah, I dunno about the Brits. They have a bizarre penchant for putting words on things that don't need words on them. A lot of rentals I've seen have looked like someone just burgled TK Max.

The nicest house I ever stayed in was a renovated farmhouse in France. I love they way they exposed some of the stonework internally.
