    Hi

I imported a 2006 Mazda 3 in 2015 and noticed a lot of rust on the underneath which has progressively got worse.

I'm considering importing a 152 Hyundai i30 in January and want to know in other people's experience is rust still an issue on UK Cars. And is the i30 badly effected?

    Thanks

I’d say it’s more specific to the model- Mazdas of that era are notorious for rusting

Beware, a new NOX charge on top of vrt comes into effect on jan1 and lots of 2015 i30’s will cost €2-3k in nox charge on top of vrt. You can check a cars nox rating on

Thanks for the head up another person on the forum said it would only incur an extra €250 due to the levels.
I see on the link you provided it says 47 so if that in mg, it would work out about €235 extra?

I don't think it's as big an issue as you often hear it is.

My car is a UK import with decent miles and was absolutely spotless underneath, surprisingly so to be honest.

I've heard too that the salt/grit mix often used on Irish roads is bad since it tends to stick to the underside of the car more than the stuff used in the UK. Could be rubbish too.

I 've been looking at a lot of uk imports recently. ALL OF THEM had terrible rust for their age compared to an Irish car . Some garages are all uk imports. Funny thing is UK garages won't take an Irish car but we shouldn't be taking their rust buckets here.

Believe it or not we use the exact same salt on our roads as the Brits do on theirs.

    No difference, nadda, nothing.

We were late to the party and only really got serious on pure salt prewet salt and indeed brine post 2010.

Only the diesels could have a high NOx charge, if it's not Euro 6. A 2015 car should be Euro 6 compliant, and the maximum permitted NOx value for a Euro 6 diesel is 80 mg/km, which means the most the NOx charge could possibly be is €600. A Euro 6 petrol will not cost more than €300 in NOx, as the maximum limit for them is 60 mg/km.

We use the same salt but we tend to use much less of it, depending on where in the UK the cars are from there can be some truth to it but i'm not sure it would be top of my considerations.

As stated above, Mazda's from that era are notorious for rust, and I'm talking from personal experience. So I'd say it's more the make and model of the car than where it came from.

Buy one that's spent it's life in the north of England or Scotland that's never been washed down properly and you'll have some mess on your hands when the tin worm takes hold.

Bad rust on a newish car for me would Say the car is coming for a property that is literally on the cost beside the sea , that’s why you’ll rarely see a dealership right up on the close seaside or coast, salt water carried with wind play’s havoc on Vehicles
