    Hi all

Looking for a recommendation on spec for a laptop that will be used for 4K video editing, Photoshop, GIS mapping, a lot of memory-intensive and graphic-intensive applications. Not much of a techie, I use these programs a lot (or will be) but not so good on the hardware required to support them.

    TIA

It's for work, they haven't given me a max budget yet so open to all ideas but I'd say under 5k. Not pushed on screen size & weight as it will be used docked with a large screen in the office most of the time, just the odd trip and meetign where it will be undocked.

I presume you want a Windows machine for this? Some use Mac so I just wanted to be sure.

4K editing, plus the rest really calls for quite a pricey machine. So maybe if you could give some idea of your price range/limit here. It's possible to do this cheaper if need be, but in an ideal world you would get as good a spec as possible.

    Things to consider...

Will you be carrying this machine around with you a lot? Or is it going to be desk based for a majority of the time? All of these tasks require a good screen, and the larger the better. But if you have a desk and an external/separate monitor this might be less of a requirement.

Spec I would want at a minimum:

15" screen, as high a resolution as possible (ie 4K ideally)
16GB of RAM at least. You may end up needing more if your workload is especially high.
Processor. Something Intel, and one of the higher end models. Which one depends on cost really.
Graphics: Something dedicated, I don't think you need something top of the line for your usage.

    Dell Xps (https://www.dell.com/en-ie/shop/laptops/xps-15/spd/xps-15-7590-laptop)
This sort of high-end spec for €2,500

16gb ram, 8-core cpu, 1650 graphics card, plenty of fast ssd storage, 4K screen

    Thinkpad 1 Extreme

seems more expensive for your specs

Thanks folks. Have been advised to go for 32GB RAM minimum - I would often be switching between programs while working and could have a video rendering while editing photos etc. Surprised at the value of those laptops, thanks again!

Yep. What a beast. Hopefully it doesn't throttle back too badly when under load.
