Fixing to EWI

I'm looking at getting a wall mounted patio heater. It weighs about 4kg and is about 70cm long. I have external wall insulation over blocks.

Has anyone any experience or knowledge about fixing something of this weight or more to EWI?

My thoughts at the moment are to use long fixings to reach the block work, and attach a thin bit of plywood to spread the load/number of fixings. I reckon this would work but am wary of damaging the structure of the EWI.

The standard approach is to use a bit of timber in place of EWI at the point. Good if the EWI hasnt been done yet. Trying to retrofit that sounds like looking for trouble though.

Saw a vid showing a guy cutting a hole in the insulation and putting a space plug in it. Looked good. Another one had these long plugs with metal collars that effectively wldid the job of space plugs without the big hole.

Hang it from a gutter fixing?

Dont hang this on your wall , would be my advice.

    Couple of reasons,

    1) it will damage your EWI's protection
    2) I have yet to see a patio heater that was used for a few days when initially purchased and then never used again, then fecked out into a skip after 4 years. Due to the price of running it.
    3) The location beside the wall is most likely just going to heat the person underneath it and thats it.
    4) The heat of the lamp could impact the EPS underneath the render thus damaging the integrity of the wall itself.

none of the above is worth it.

If you must mount it, then build a stand off mount from the wall out of timber like a pergola or something.

EWI is very expensive and messing with it, is very expensive too. I know this because i installed my own 200mm EWI system and you wouldnt not catch me hanging a heated machine off it. $$$$$

You will need a supply from the fuse board. I have fitted lights and letter boxes onto insulated walls I use 6mm threaded rod and anchors with nuts and washers. Make sure there is a fire rating on the insulation, after getting a price for all the works to be done just go but a gas heater and save a hole load of money!!

I believe the gas heaters are no longer available

You can get gas heaters still. We have an LPG tank so we could even get one piped from that I think. However they leak a bit and are much more expensive to run, and therefore emit more greenhouse gases. Not that patio heaters as a concept are the best things in that regard.

Decided to hold off on it for the moment. We'll look at a parasol style one if we get one, once the patio is actually in place along with furniture.

    Thanks for the replies.
