Has anyone ever been offered a job, starting in the new year, still no exact start date given.

The worrier in me, has started to worry. Could the employer change their mind since it's still a few weeks away?

Get your contract and get it signed. No going back then and no more worries

I hired somebody last month but he isn't going to start until the new year.

It just works out better for everybody that way, by the time he works his notice he would have been coming into us a week before christmas, a time when everybody is busy trying to get cleared up and doesn't really have the time to integrate a new hire. And there is little point to him coming in for a few days, achieving nothing and then taking the most of two weeks off.

Instead he got flexibility with notice so as not to leave his old job in the lurch, we don't have to train him before christmas, and everybody gets to go off and enjoy their break before starting fresh in the new year.

The undefined start date, that doesn't sound ideal but then it wouldn't be ideal at any time of year. But delaying the start until after the holidays isn't that crazy an idea.
