Title makes it sound like it was the act of cooking that is illegal.

Thread title has literally nothing to do with anything..

While eating rabbit in the canteen when I worked in france many years ago one of my co workers told me that with the head off and skinned it is hard to tell the difference between a rabbit and a cat.

No one should be jailed for trespassing on land (inside a woman or girl's bedroom is a different matter).

What if he was only making Rabbit Stew in there?

Poor old Frodo and Sam, they would have gone hungry in Ithilien without herbs and stewed rabbit.

Why is making rabbit stew illegal? Serious question.

Not realistic unless he didn't realise that she was in there. I don't think that anyone should be jailed for breaking into an empty house to make stew. We've all done it.

So in essence he has skinned and eaten a cat?

    jailed for making stew!

    Actually, scratch that....
Three months in jail for hunting rabbits to eat them!

    When in fact.....
he pleaded guilty to a charge of roaming land in contravention of the Wildlife Act.

GTFO of here with your clickbait nonsense

I've only done it a few times and it wasn't rabbit stew.

I've just gone right off rabbit.:eek:

The article states "He makes stew from the caught rabbit, which is illegal."

Well that's news to me. Sounds as though English isn't the journalists first language. Surprised it wasn't picked up before publishing, then again, Machiavellian thoughts - No such thing as bad publicity. - Drives traffic to the Kildare Now website.

Why wasn't the GOBSHEEN of a landowner named?

We should all have the right to roam! Who is the GOBSHEEN landowner getting honest father's of four jailed for going for a walk?

He said that hunting rabbits was a pastime, handed down by the defendant’s father. He makes stew from the caught rabbit, which is illegal.

Either making stew from caught rabbits is illegal*, or it's just atrocious journalism.

*consuming illegally hunted game, or whatever the actual wording might be.

He wouldn’t have got that if he’d burgled the house.

    Well said!

No doubt this judge would have given them three months for the rabbits and six for the stolen ring!

So I should be allowed to just waltz into your garden anytime I want?

According to the law you would be as long as you didn't make any stews or hotpots.

I believe the crime is use of a slow cooker with intent to supply.

I bet if it was your land they were trespassing on with a gun you'd want them locked up ;)

You don't get advertising revenue on boards.ie posts so no need for the clickbait thread title.

You must've missed the part in the article where it tells us that he was hunting rabbits with lurchers.

I thought he was jailed for making stew?

Also, seeing as we all have the right to roam, stick your address up there on Boards and we'll all pop round to your gaff for an auld roam.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Travelers are regularly hunting the fields behind my house in Lucan for rabbits with their dogs. I've seen them finish off ones still alive with a hammer. I can only presume they eat the rabbits themselves or feed them to their dogs? Didn't know this was illegal? What is illegal, the trespassing or killing rabbits with your dogs? They don't own these fields, but it is hardly trespassing as there are no signs up and it is easy to enter these fields from many different directions. Not much in the way of gates, fences or walls.

Actually the hunting part of it is illegal if you dont have the landowners permission to kill them (Also landowner would have to pay you to kill them).

Entering somebody elses land without their permission for the purpose of hunting wild animals is an offence in itself. The lack of signs or obstacles to entry is not relevant.

    Ridiculous!

What a country- some 'landowner' who probably got the land off the British or something can get an honest Irishman jailed for hunting Rabbits.

Who is this judge Zaidan any way? Zaidan isn't a Kildare name. Is he an actual judge or forty rabbits in a judge's costume?

Is Zaidan in fact a rabbit?

    Ridiculous! Rabbits are vermin!
    When you can shoot rabbits
If you are the occupier of land, you can shoot rabbits on your land during the day and can authorise, in writing, one other person to do so. That person must be part of your household, one of your staff or be employed for reward to specifically control the rabbits.

You can shoot rabbits at night only if you are:
    - an owner/occupier with shooting rights
    - a landlord/landlady who has reserved their shooting rights
    - a shooting tenant not in occupation who has derived the shooting rights from the owner
    - an occupier, or one other person authorised by the occupier in writing, where the occupier has written authority from someone with the shooting rights

That's an old picture. It looks a fair bit nicer there now that Sisk have built a load of new houses there - the terribly name Sheehy Skeffington Meadows.

It won't last mind, that area has looked pretty run down for as long as I can remember.
